Hey guys,
let me be Short and sweet.
I am starting nursing school soon. Is it possible for me to (after I graduate and work like a year), get a part time job such as 2 twelve hour shifts a week instead of 3 shifts? And more importantly, consecutively like monday and tuesday, or thursday and friday etc? (or even 15 hour shfits, the concept is 2 consecutive days a week though, that is what is important, even if it was night shifts, nasty work, scummy hospital, whatever).
Do people exist who partake of such a part time or halftime position?
I can explain details later (if anyone is kind enough to share their experience and words of wisdom!).
Thanks so much for any response!

OP, it depends where you work. Some managers love working with 12-hour shifts, others don't monkey with them. Every 3rd weekend is pretty common in places that have a lot of 12s. Otherwise, you'll probably have to work every other.
Honestly, although it's not impossible, I think it will be difficult to find, especially since you seem very committed to staying in your area. Then again, by the time you graduate, the market might open up.... But for now, I would stay flexible.
I work two 12 hour shifts a week as well. We also do the every 3rd weekend. But we "own" our weekend, so we always know what weekend we work, forever and ever. So for me, if it's my weekend, I would still work 1 weekday, as Saturday and Sunday are considered different weeks.
As long as you have a manager that doesn't mind, you can usually get them to schedule you together. You may have an occasional time they are seperate, just due to staffing needs though.
Lots of people work part time. However, as a new grad, it may not be possible to get these shifts right off the bat - a lot of hospitals want you to work full time for a certain amount of time. I know at my hospital, you have to do 18 months full time if you start off in the new grad internships.
where i work we have what they call 'weekend nurse' only there on the weekends and work 12hrs on sat and sun.. they also get paid more hrly as an incentive of working every weekend since most nurses want some weekends off.. tho they dont get benefits they do get a certain number of days to use for sick or personal days a yr.. and being a new grad i dont c where that would b a problem, that really depends on the agency or facilty on hiring. finding a job as a new grad can b a pain depending on if ur in a bigger city or a lil town. good luck!
Nice! THanks guys! this all works. I do plan on working as much as possible, even at several different places to fill up my time for almost a year or so after graduating Lord willing, but after the year I plan on getting the 2 shifts in a row thing a week going on. It is quite vital to what I want, specifically, being married and living in mexico and coming up to the valley to work and heading home again! Thanks again guys! I now know it is possible! I just have to graduate now!
thanks!
Nice! By every third weekend, you mean every third week you DONT work during the week and just work the weekend? Or you work the weekend including your normal shift? Anyways, Thanks!
Correct, just 2 shifts a week. This is usually what I work; Sun, Mon, Sun, Mon, Fri, Sat repeat. As you can see some weeks I work 4 nights in a row (yeah ouch) but then I have 10 days off (yea)
Hello ! so this is weird and random, but i remember posting on here and wanted to give myself some closure :)
I've finished the nursing program at a school i now hate, and actively advise people not to go to, and i'm now working as an RN on a telemetry/stepdown unit at a hospital in the RGV.
I'm getting married this summer and am working my schedule out with another nurse who ALSO lives in Mexico and just comes to work, so that we work our days back to back and then have 4-6 days off at home.
Livin' the Dream!
By the Grace of God.
