PHSC 2015 Nursing Hopefuls

Published

Hey everyone!

I found one topic on this, but it wasn't very active, so I hope this one becomes a little more successful. My name is Jennifer, and I am applying for the January 2015 Nursing Program at PHSC. My home campus is Porter at Wiregrass Ranch. Are there any other 2015 hopefuls? I'd like to get to know you all! I am taking my TEAS next Tuesday and am so nervous. This will be my first time taking the TEAS. Have any of you taken it? How was it?

Any tips? I have finished all me pre-reqs and finished with a 3.6. Not too bad, wish I would have got higher! Hope I get in! Good luck to all you ladies!

Thanks!

for the composite score is it 5 points residency or .05? I spoke to connie today at phsc she's on the committee that reviews the Nursing program apps and told me she cannot disclose that information. I meet the requirements to apply but I want to hopefully try again and get a higher score.

From what I have read on this forum, the residency bonus is 5 points, sweet101!

Awesome! thanks!

Dear Cruz.Cookie,

I just want to say I commend you for still trying to achieve your dreams despite the rejection from your previous school. I also want to let you know that I know exactly what you're going through (feeling as if you're stuck in a complex situation) because I, too, used to be a USF nursing student. I got kicked out because of a technicality.. so lame. But anyways, everyone has been very encouraging towards me, telling me that I should just go achieve nursing somewhere else, so I decided in trying to pursue nursing at PHSC. I wish you the best of luck, and I know that you will get where you want to go as long as you keep working for it. :)

Maybe we'll see each other in class ;) ttyl

That is an awesome score! Your chances are definitely pretty good.

For clinicals, a woman in the program told me it's basically a crap shoot. She was on east campus and occasionally would have to drive to New Port Richey and even St. Pete for clinicals. It all depends on what hospitals are available and what they charge for nursing students to practice there. Since PHSC is a rather inexpensive school they end up taking whatever the more expensive schools don't want since the big name schools can afford to pay their way and PHSC can't.

You are misinformed about clinical locations..... Let me give you a run down... Basically funds had OAKHILLL, Spring hill hospital, Bayonet point, and Bayfront. Adult 1 has Oakhill, Trinity and Springhill health and rehab. They randomly give you a location it isn't based on where you live... Clinical sites are dependent on where you are in the program. It doesn't depend on what hospitals are available, I don't know where your friend heard that... PHSC has first dibs on the hospitals and your observational experience over all other schools. It has nothing to do with money, the people who work at the hospitals around here are 60% phsc grads and favor our program. (West campus sites) Yes being a resident gives you 5%, whoever gets in goodluck with the titer, vaccine physical etc run, first couple weeks are always hard for beginners in the program, but you'll get used to it. I will give everyone a tip on how to pass, print the powerpoints, read the laps, and do the test preps. You'll be golden. (Book is helpful for test prep) No one bothers reading all the chapters. People who work in the program are having a difficult time, I advise anyone who is working full time cut to part time. Most people in the program work as waitress/bartender/CNA's, The cna's work prn 1-2 days a week 12hr shifts.

Hi everyone! Hope you're getting excited for the summer (not to mention those ACCEPTANCE LETTERS that will be rolling out within the next few months!) I'm currently finishing up my second semester of the RN program at Porter and just wanted to drop by to offer you guys a bit of encouragement! Like you guys, I started a thread similar to this when I was finishing up my last few prereqs. Some of the friends I made through here became my fellow classmates and are now some of my dearest friends! :-) You all's scores look really great (as I quickly glanced through while I should be studying for finals..ha! ;-P) Hang in there and try to keep yourselves busy! Those long, tiring hours of stalking your mailman will soon pay off and the day you've been waiting for will be here before you know it! I know it's hard, but try to enjoy this brief interim of being in limbo...really use it to get inspired so you can hit the ground running when fall rolls around, whether you are offered a seat this semester or reapply for Spring.

On an unrelated note, PHSC does NOT have first selection for clinical facilities...the nursing dean herself has explained this time after time! Private institutions that are able to pay top dollar for sites typically weasel their way in whereas PHSC has to go off of reputation alone, which in theory is great, but at the end of the day money is more concrete.

Anyways! Best of luck to you all! Hope to see you on campus soon! :-)

PHSC has contracts with HCA.... must depend on the hospital.

Does anyone know when they start evaluating applications and when letters go out?

Thanks for the encouragement and good luck on finals! :)

Not sure, apps are due June 15 according to the PHSC website so I assume maybe mid-July we would know? Based on the last two classes accepted (that I have read on this forum), letters are mailed end of June/beginning of July..

@Mike @theAFwife how is the program overall? Is there intense check off's..reports to the preceptor..anything? I'd like to get a glimpse of the program overall. Thanks!

The letters will be sent out at the end of July. They have extended the date this year to apply. Last year the deadline was June 1. This year it is June 15.
