PHSC 2015 Nursing Hopefuls

Published

Hey everyone!

I found one topic on this, but it wasn't very active, so I hope this one becomes a little more successful. My name is Jennifer, and I am applying for the January 2015 Nursing Program at PHSC. My home campus is Porter at Wiregrass Ranch. Are there any other 2015 hopefuls? I'd like to get to know you all! I am taking my TEAS next Tuesday and am so nervous. This will be my first time taking the TEAS. Have any of you taken it? How was it?

Any tips? I have finished all me pre-reqs and finished with a 3.6. Not too bad, wish I would have got higher! Hope I get in! Good luck to all you ladies!

Thanks!

I'm a transition hopeful :-) glad to see another nurse on here like me. ;-)

Finally took the TEAS last week. What a stupid test for nursing!! I did end up getting an 81% and have a 3.9 prereq GPA, so I'm feeling pretty good about my chances, but you never know! I would like to be at Wiregrass, since they have a newer campus, but I'm not picky. Anyone else shooting for Wiregrass or know how many seats they have in the fall? Anyone know where they do clinicals?

That is an awesome score! Your chances are definitely pretty good.

As for seats, as far as I'm aware there are 24 seats per campus, so this semester there are 72 seats in total. For clinicals, a woman in the program told me it's basically a crap shoot. She was on east campus and occasionally would have to drive to New Port Richey and even St. Pete for clinicals. It all depends on what hospitals are available and what they charge for nursing students to practice there. Since PHSC is a rather inexpensive school they end up taking whatever the more expensive schools don't want since the big name schools can afford to pay their way and PHSC can't.

Only 24 seats..? Wow that makes me anxious!! But hey thanks for the info

Hi all!

I am applying to the PHSC nursing program. I'm in a complex situation in that I used to be a USF nursing student. I got denied progression in my program in my fourth semester because of clinical. I always had difficult performing well in clinical rotation because I didn't have that one to one or that additional healthcare experience. I got lost in the 200+ nursing students at the school. That was one of my downfalls. Another, I had clinical anxiety and my critical thinking wasn't the best. I know ..horrible! Since then I have secured a job as a student nurse in a hospital and gained valuable experience. I have a sense of autonomy ..engagement in critical thinking.. And applying clinical reasoning skills. USF didn't give me a second chance ...however I will not stop my dreams of becoming a nurse. I was so close to preceptorship and now I have to put on my bootstraps..march on ...and start all over. This will be a great opportunity for me --when one door closes another opens up. God willing I will get to prove my second chance here at PHSC.

Actually, I have taken prereqs at PHCC (back when they were named PHCC) about 2 years ago and they are all A's and one B in statistics. My gpa is a 3.8. I'm purchasing a TEAS review book and I am a Hernando county resident as well. Im planning to study the TEAS all of April and taking the test MARCH ...hopefully get a great score to apply on June. Any suggestions for the review book would be great thank you!! :)

Hello everyone. I have been awaiting the 2015 application for the past two years in hopes of getting accepted to the west campus PM-RN transition.

I stopped by to see an advisor today and received some horrible news. I am an SPC transfer, and all of my requisite classes are from SPC. This includes the computer class. At SPC, I had completed CTS1101(basic computer info/literacy, 1 credit hour). We all know what assuming does, and I had assumed that the SPC computer class was an equivenlent to PHSC's. Little did i know that PHCC/PHSC student have to complete a full three credit hours for a computer class, which is CGS1100.

So now I begin the pretty much impossible task of getting PHCC to accept my class as an equivalent. The only thing I have going for me is that the course descriptions are pretty much mirror images of each other, with the exception of contact hours. As a bonus, CGS1100 is offered this summer, and ends a week after the nursing application window closes(figured, right?)

I feel I've been defeated before I've even begun!

Ps: I've done a little digging. Turns out it wolnt even be remotely possible to transfer. I will just have to take the course Bolger the summer and apply next year. That's one person out of the running!

The good thing with PHSC is that the class sizes are much smaller than USF and you do get more one on one time with professors. If you learn better that way, then I'm sure you've already seen the huge difference a small school makes.

A 3.8 GPA is really good, but just make sure that's your pre-req GPA, the pre-reqs are A&P 1, A&P 1 Lab, Microcomputer Applications, Intro to Psych, and Nutrition. Statistics would be a co-req for the bachelor's program and your grade in that class won't be taken into consideration when you apply. You might have a higher pre-req GPA than you think!

Definitely know the material in the ATI TEAS manual, don't just memorize it! Also plan to take the test with enough time that you could retake it before the application deadline if things don't go exactly as planned. Your new found critical thinking skills will definitely be challenged on this test!

There is always the spring! I've heard the competition is less intense at that time, anyway!

While I'm online and absolutely obsessed with the nursing program, here's the current list of all three people that have posted their scores:

CoreyMHill: 95.7% Prefers East Campus

ChillyB : 90%

MrCookieMonster: 89.37% Prefers Porter Campus

Looks like it's measuring up to be a pretty competitive semester!

Hi Corey! Is microbiology included in that prereq gpa? And actually my prereq gpa was a 3.8 it includes statistics A&p 1 and 2--class and lab, nutrition , microbiology , microcomputer ...that's all I can remember but if it's only those classes you listen then omg I got a 4.0 prereq gpa plus im a hernando resident !! All I need is a great score on my TEAS :) !! I wonder where they do their clinicals ....I'm pretty sure the north campus goes to oak hill hospital.

I know in my second chance I will be able to grasp information much more better since I've already been through everything except preceptorship.

The only prereqs are AP1 (and lab), Nutrition, Micro Comp Apps, and Gen Psych. So provided you have all A's in those you should be in good shape... TEAS isn't too bad as long as you're comfortable with basic algebra, cell biology, and well... grammar. But it is pretty long, bring a snack lol

Eeek! So nervous but excited it's almost time to apply! Looks like I'll be applying with a 4.0 since I've been able to keep my Nutrition grade above a B! :) I'm glad we are keeping a running tally too! I prefer Porter since I live nearby.
