Members are discussing the benefits of joining Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) at community colleges, focusing on GPA requirements, scholarships, transcript notations, and potential advantages in job applications and transfer to four-year programs. Some users have received scholarships and opportunities through PTK, while others question the value of membership and the exclusivity of the organization. Overall, opinions vary on the worthiness of joining PTK and the impact it has on academic and professional opportunities.
I was recently invited to join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and was wondering if anyone who has experience with this honor society has found it beneficial other than it looking nice on resumes. My thinking is that most nursing students qualify for this honor due to the grades that must be maintained/acquired for nursing school. How would this make someone stand out in the field of nursing if most nursing students probably qualify?
Has anyone found that it helped them get any new-grad positions when they graduated? Did it help with scholarships? Did it look good when you wanted to transfer to a university? Did you find it helpful in terms of networking? Did it apply to any or none of the above?
I was also wondering what the GPA cutoff is? How low can your GPA fall before they kick you out? I could always ask this at the orientation meeting, but that isn't anytime soon.
I had also heard of Sigma Theta Tau (specifically for nurses) and was wondering what one would need to do in order to be invited to join?
Thanks for reading.
Every semester after final grades post, I get some kind of correspondence from the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society inviting me (and even pressuring me) to join.
I've looked through the information they provide about the sorts of things they do and what they offer their members, but I am still having a hard time deciding if I ought to join.
Anyone have any experience in this area? Is it worth the dues?
TIA
Hmmm, I am wondering the same thing. The only reason I might be interested is for scholarships, although one of my professors who I respect very much said I should join.
I hope some of the other students will share their experiences.
It is THE honor society for associates programs. Being in it shows that you did well. You get to wear a special hood or cord at graduation showing that you are an honor student. I joined my school's chapter just for these reasons.
You can get as involved as you would like, or just be a member. There are scholarships available now, as well as if you go on to get a bachelors degree, so that is something to look into. I think it is something to put on a resume to get your first job, too.
I joined. It was $60. No monthly dues or anything. There are a few scholarships available just for its members, and it does look good on the resume. I figured it couldn't hurt.
I don't plan on attending meetings either. LOL!
I am a member of PTK. I would definitely encourage you to sign up! It cost me about 75 to join; I got a lapel pin, and a very nice, large certificate I framed and put on my wall. The best part is... I'm going to get a scholarship for $500 per semester when I start at the University - woohoo!. Oh, and it will look good on the resume too, of course! lol
Oh no! I received a letter from them, too. But I threw it out because I thought I had to be involved in activities that I knew I would not be able to commit to. Darn it! Now I wish I would have checked into it more.

No worries--contact your local chapter and let them know you're interested in joining. If they don't have a chapter, go to the PTK website.
PTK does offer a lot of scholarship opportunities and looks good on the resume. I enjoyed going to graduation wearing all of the regalia, and my sash and cord hang on the wall...as inspiration to try to get into Sigma Theta Tau
I was in PTK and really liked it. I did have to do an activity like once a month or twice a semester, but it wasn't bad at all! I go to do a lot of networking and meet some of the higher-ups in the college. I got an amazing scholarship (2,500/semester). Also, putting it on my resume' hasn't done much for me yet, but I'm hoping eventaully someone will see it and care...
I just received an invitation from my community college to join phi theta kappa honor society for two-year colleges. would it be advantageous of me to join ... as in helping me to get into a nursing program over someone not a member, or should I just save my $60 membership fee?

I was invited but didn't join because I was that broke and so broke that I was no longer in school. I would definitely join for the benefit of having the entry for your resume.

That stinks. Can't you walk in to see your local chapter sponsor? That's what I'd do. It's easy for someone to ignore or forget about a phone call, but they can't ignore you when you are standing face to face. Good luck!
