PHCC Fall 2010 applicants? You out there??

:-)

Well, I am finished with the pre-reqs, as of December. Have taken the TEAS once but will take it again. I have met with a few advisors and one prof in the nursing dept on East. I cannot get any clear and concise information really and it's frustrating. My GPA is relatively low, comparatively (sp?) and I am trying to guage my actual chances of getting into the program. I am only applying to PHCC (either campus) and the not knowing is killing me.

So where is everyone else? I am ready to get my stuff turned in. And then the wait.

Oh, believe me, I would have been happy to accept an RN invite to PHCC. And, I certainly didn't mean any ill will towards PHCC and their program. I know they admit less than others, but HCC is good too, and I've already applied for their Spring...so it wouldn't make sense for me to go through the wait again for PHCC if I know in September about HCC.

Thanks! You too! I hope you alternates get some good phone calls (and soon)!

Pasco, please keep us abreast of what you find out tomorrow. I will be on campus tomorrow and do not plan on leaving until I get some straight answers about this Wizard of Oz game b.s. they are doing.

Although I am not an expert I think I can help shed light on confusion. When looking at TEAS test scores many applicants assume the selection commitee only cares about the composite score. In previous selections when the NET was used thier was a criteria of (don't quote me on this) 55% Reading 35% Math 10% composite score. So it is easily possible for people w/ lower composite scores to be considered a better applicant from a weighted score standpoint. Even this mock up formula is over simplifying the process, but I can assure you..looking at only composite is definately not giving you the best picture of admission chances.

Furthermore, since I know I will soon get the question of what my scores were. I got a composite score of 88.9 and a pre req GPA of 4.0. I may have been able to retake the test and get a higher composite but b/c my reading was a 100% and math was a 94% I was worried I would raise my composite and actually DECREASE my chance of entry for aforementioned reasons. I was accepted into the RN for fall and my friend also was accepted. My friend had only a 3.54 pre req GPA but a 95.8 TEAS composite, and I'm not sure of the individual section breakdowns. I have read this thread for months and continue to root for all of you. Gratz to those who got in see you in the fall....

Chris...On my way to admissions and the Nursing office...just remember to be non-confrontational if you ask any questions. You never want to burn any bridges and should only look for transparency, not necessarily wanting to argue your way in, thus having someone else removed. I'm sure you'll be cool.

Dang a 95.8%?? That's the highest I've ever heard of! Good job to both of you!

It will be interesting to hear what you guys find out from the school.

The difference, I think, between the use of the NET and the TEAS, is that the powers that be were very upfront with what the NET breakdown was, but we were all told that TEAS composite would be what was used to determine entry (plus the other factors--GPA and residency). I pushed and pushed on this with my advisor because my science was not great (most of that science I have not had since middle school! And I am 36 years old....so that was a long time ago!), but everything else was really good--in the 90's for everything. So if there was anything that was going to tip me in either direction, I wanted to know. Meaning, if they were going to use Science, I was probably in trouble but if they were using reading or math, I was GOLDEN. KWIM? And he said repeatedly that it was composite only.

So I wonder what the tie-breaker(s) was/were. Did they look at co-req's? Overall GPA? Does the candidate have another degree?

At any rate, can't wait to hear what you discover :)

Spoke with someone in Admissions...not very helpful. Said it's not possible anyone could have placed ahead of someone else if they didn't have higher scores (TEAS 50%, GPA 45%, Residence 5%). Said Reading on the TEAS was the tiebreaker if people had the same. Then spoke with a very helpful advisor and she said she was a little shocked I didn't even make alternate with a 3.77 and an 88.8. She managed to clarify some things for me though. They do not lump you into LPN if you apply to both and have applied to PN in the past.

Like the rest of you, I'm very curious to see what Chris & Pasco Student find out! What I was reading about the scores in certain sections of the TEAS may be right. I got a 95 in Reading and 90 in English, 84 in Math and 76 in Science. I bombed the Science section but maybe the Reading and English scores did in fact help??? We'll see...

I wish there were enough Nursing instructors allowing more of us to get in that we do not have to worry about all this! I'll probably have to see a nurse myself with the stress-induced ulcers I'm probably getting! :anbd:

Pasco Student,

What a bummer...did they say if they would re-review it at least for an alternate status with your great scores? HOW FRUSTRATING!
