It is 100% effective for the virus causing 75% of cervical cancers. I can think of fewer better programs. We Aussies are going to be vaccinating, but then WE invented it:p

Well we're glad SOMEBODY invented it!!! Yaay!! Now what I really DON'T want to hear is how this vaccination is going to lead to increased promiscuity. I hear all this "buzz" on the news and I'm SOOO very tired of it.

You tell your kids - this will help to prevent you from getting a form of cancer that can kill you. Period. Has nothing to do with an increase in "sexual activity" or whatever other crazy crap.

Have a good day!!

I saw a news special on this the other day. Makes sense to me.

I've always wondered...

Don't they say that women who use birth control pills have a higher incidence of cervical cancer than those who do not? I know I've heard this, and some have even said it's one of the risks of taking the Pill. BUT I always assumed it was because women on the Pill are less likely to use condoms, thus having more opportunity to get HPV from men. Women who are not on the Pill use condoms more often, thus lowering their exposure to HPV. Yet I don't see this scenario as an explaination in the literature.

Am I crazy, or does it not make perfect sense?

The other remarkable thing is that this IS a vaccine against a type of cancer. Which means that some forms of cancer may be viral in origin and that vaccines could be developed against them.

Awesome.

my facility has just added some new ones....though they may not be all new, they were added to our immunization series/schedule.

-ProQuad......varicella and MMR in one dose/injection

-Hep-A vaccine

-RotaVac....new vaccine for rotavirus

In my clinic they are waiting to give the hep b vaccine at 8 weeks.Pro quad vaccine sounds like a good one!

i agree, it saves 1 injection for the little ones. on the other hand RotaVac/RotaTeq sounded good till we began to use it...it is 2.0CC PO, not IM and given at 2, 4, and 6 months. try getting the little buggers to swallow that stuff without spitting it out!! an IM Rota may have actually been better IMO if they can make it, i feel the PO gets the infants more upset than an IM injection.

where in NY are you?

The rotavac is already causing some problems with kiddo's bowels. The old roto vaccine was pulled off the market I think in1999 for the same thing. CDC putting out warnings. We're not giving it now-kinda waiting to see if this one is pulled.

No, you are not crazy and it does make perfect sense.

I work with the CA Dept of Health Services, and I've heard a lot about this new vaccine, HPV. And I've heard a lot of the "buzz" about increased promiscuity too. In fact, I've talked to providers who refuse to administer the vaccine because of their own personal views. Remember that when the Hep B vaccine was introduced the same people said the same thing. I don't know about you...but I have never met a newborn who was just biting at the bit to go have sex right after they completed their series. I guess my point is that we should really encourage parents to get the HPV vaccine when their children are as young as possible. This has two benefits: 1) higher rates of protection and 2) less need for parents to worry about the sexual nature of the disease. But if an older girl comes in for the shot, parents might be encouraged to use that opportunity to talk to their daughter about other sexually transmitted diseases.
