paying for school questions

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

What have some of you done for jobs while in school to make ends meet? I've decided to go back to school and I'm trying to figure out how to pay for it and pay rent and bills..... I've got a few toys to sell and that will help alot, but the hospital that has the nursing school only pays $6/hour for max 16 hours a week to students! Well I can't live on that. I'm looking into student loans and such but any advice is really appreciated

Thanks for the info but I'm 32 years old, starting a second career. I probably won't go the military route. Thanks again anyway. I was actually thinking of employers who are sympathetic to students who care about making good grades and need to make some income too.

At 32 yrs old your still a young man! The Health Care profession is also my second career, and I started college when I was 32 yrs old. Plus, the Army Nurse Corps cut off age is 46 yrs old. ;)

someone should post a thread somewhere outlining all of the binnies you get as an officer in the armed forces. i think people would be really surprised. most people i know see the base pay and turn away, but when i start telling them about bah, baq, cola, comrats, seapay, family sep pay, AND ALL TAX FREE, they are stunned. i was BRINGING HOME $1300 every 2 weeks when i was stationed in san diego (imagine being paid MORE to live somewhere so awesome!) as an E5. as an O1, you could expect twice that much.

Excellent comments! Similar benefits have been posted in the Military/VA Forum section. Do you visit the Military Forum?

Oh my gosh your kidding! 46 years old! I am prior Air Force from many moons ago. I have often thought about joining the military again, but thought I was to old. I am in my last semester of an associates degree practical nursing program. Is there any information available online about this? I am 43 soon to be 44 and I would not mind finding out a little more about this opportunity.

Have an Army Health Care Recruiter put together your application for direct commission packet, ASAP. BTW, if its benefits the military they can always pull out the waiver card. ;)

Just a small note about student loans. Most of them you don't have to pay on while you are in school. You can choose to pay the interest (which was about $11.00 every couple of months for me), and with most students loans you don't have to start paying them back until you have been out of school for about 6 months. Good Luck to you !!!

Thanks for all the info. I'm working for my family now but was looking at other options. I'm still looking for info on grants, and student loans. Thanks again.

I work 2 jobs. Consultant at my campus IT center.

And at nights ant weekend - I haul trash, scrub toilets, wash dishes...

I live in a hole in the ground with three other kids. My princely possessions include a computer and a 10 year old car I need for making clinicals. I haven't changed my wardrobe in 4 years.

Hey, anything to make the grade man ;)

I dream about the clothes and shoes and whatnot I will buy once I become an RN :roll

I work at two bars, home healthcare and work study, I have no life what so ever but I am PASSING and in my final year. (YES !!!) See if you can get a job with work study at the school you go to. Apply in the computer dept. (thats where I am) It usually doesnt take alot of education or know how to get one. Mainly I help students with the computers and study. I get paid to study. I do most of my work here at school or when I was in 100 I would take my medical definitions to one of the bars with me and pass out the note cards and have to tell the person what the answer was. (the bars are a VFW (ex military myself but they do hire out) and an Eagles club) It helped me to pass and people learned somethings out of it. They actually were upset when I stopped doing it. ha ha

I am 40 and thinking of going back into the service myself. I found out that the cut off age for the national guard was 36 but they count my time in already so I might be able to get in (had a little problem when I was younger :( ) I think it would be awesome to go back in as a nurse and an officer.

I guess I started my planning early. I changed careers about 5 yrs ago, left the corperate crud, and went to massage school. Now I work about 10-15 hours a week and make enought to pay the bills, and I still have time for college. Glad I did that.
