waiting list...truth or rumor
I was just told that the waiting list for most schools has things that basically get you moved up in the line. 1. Being a male candidate (sounds bogus to me but that's what I was told) 2. Getting Pell Grants and certain other government finacial aid like stafford loans 3. good or GREAT grades in prereq. classes 4. age of student( this one sounds bogus too) older is better I was told these things make a big difference, Is there any truth to this, or are most waiting list first come first serve as long as you meet the entry requirements?

How does it work in your school when you have to miss clinical?
Playing devil's advocate.... In the programs that basically have a "no miss" policy (like the one that said you can miss 8 hours, but it's 12 hour days) or you flunk out... What happens when someone gets the flu or some other bad illness. Do you flunk out, due to something that is not your fault? I would think there would be some policy on such circumstance.

Federal aid available to nursing students???
Are there any forms of federal aid for nursing students? I was laid off and I think there is no time like the present to finally go to nursing school. This is something I have wanted for a while(I've been asking questions about it on this site since2006!) Do Pell grants pay for anything besides tuition, books, ect.. What about living expenses? Gas to go to school? ECT............ Also I live in Maine, anyone know of state programs for out of work employees to get some education. I have an appointment with our local community college advisor, but don't even know what to ask. Thanks

Excelsior questions
I'm not an LPN. This is a big career change for me. I don't work in health care now but I'm looking. I'm gearing up right now to go back to school. Do you have to be an LPN for their program? Thanks.

Why do Hospital Schools of Nursing ask for so much more personal information?
Well let's not argue about right or wrong of having a credit score. I don't have a credit score, I have nothing financed, I owe nothing. I'm not about to save up for something I want, then get a loan, and pay it off, just to give a bank interest, fees ect... just to have a credit score. It's just that a credit score has no relevence on how a person pays bills, their finanial responsibility, or anything else about them. So why would a hospital require it? I'm going into nursing as a second career. I've been a commercial pilot for quite a while, I've NEVER had a credit report check as part any background check. What's the point?

Excelsior questions
I found out about the Excelsior program and went to their website. Maybe I missed something but I don't get how you do your clinicals? I didn't call them because I really didn't want to hear a sales pitch. I'm just curious, do you do all the classes online and then what for clinicals????? Thanks all.

Working While in Nursing School??
What jobs have you had during nursing school that allowed you to have some income, but gave you time to study?

Why do Hospital Schools of Nursing ask for so much more personal information?
I don't understand the credit check. What happens when you don't believe in credit and if you can't pay for it you don't get it? I have a really low credit rating/score because I don't finance anything and don't have any credit cards. A credit score is an "I love debt score". Anyone else listen to DAVE RAMSEY?

questions about starting a new career and the family
Hello, I'm wanting to get the ball rolling on starting a new career by going to nursing school. This is not a new idea for me as I have been wanting to do this for about ten years now. The problem is my wife doesn't want me to go back to school because she says that it's unfair for her to bear the load of bills, house note, child care ect....and she says she doesn't spend enough time with our child now, so she can't work anymore. I don't blame her for that, because she works full time now. I totally get her point, but due to where we live( where SHE want's to live), I can't get more than low paying, crappy jobs, that don't support us anyway. It seems like the perfect time to go back to school(now that I got laid off from one of those crappy jobs). I've told her that I can work almost full time until actual nursing school starts, and I'm looking for another job to do this. My point is, this will be a vicious cycle of crappy jobs unless I go back to school. I can sum this up by saying I keep having really crappy jobs, that don't pay anything, and don't work out for very long, and she is sick of that, but doesn't seem to want me to do anything but have another crappy job that I don't like, for some company that will probably have another round of lay-offs. Honestly, I would think she would WANT me do do this(go back to school)! I don't get it. Any advice is really appreciated.

Online nursing programs
I'm trying to find out all I can about online programs. Something may have come up where I need to travel a good bit while working my way towards nursing school. Any info for online programs would be most appriciated.

Charms of Maine
I love the York Beach area! Also if you like a great fish sandwich go to the Owl's Head General store on Fridays for the best haddock melt EVER! The town of Owls Head is just outside of Rockland. You can also catch a ten minute flight over to Vinalhaven or get a senic flight with Penobscot Island Air. They are truely a great bunch of guys.(The owner's wife is a nurse!) I lived in ME for two years and loved it, but the winters are a little brutal. PM me if you plan on going to the Rockland area, I'll give you alot more info.

SBU/ST. JOHN's or Ozark Tech
I'm trying to make a choice. I can either try and get in to OTC's LPN program (which has no waiting list)and get an RN afterwards through another program or try for St. J's ASN/RN program. My final goal is to get a BSN as quickly and cheaply as possible. It seems that SBU/ST. J's may take to long to get in, not that OTC is easier but there is no waiting list. Any incite from former or current students at these schools would be most appriciated.
