Overheard at the nurse's station

Nurses General Nursing

Published

My office is at the opposite end of the unit, away from the nurse's station. My daily routine is to spend the mornings on the unit, rounding with doctors, helping with care, and talking to patients. I spend the afternoons in my office doing paperwork and administrative tasks. The hospital is remodeling the floor above ours, and I needed to move out of my office for a few weeks because of the noise and dirt directly above me. My office is now temporarily in a small storage area right behind the nurse's desk. Some of the staff must have forgotten I was there, because this is the conversation that took place. (Some details have been changed to protect the innocent. And HIPAA)

CNA: Can you look at the IV in 412? It keeps beeping.

RN: That's not my patient.

Me, coming out of the office: Did you just tell her that's not my patient when she asked for help?

RN: NO

CNA: Yes she did.

ME: Go take care of the IV then come into my office

So we had the talk about teamwork, respect, integrity, and putting patients first. Of course she said she was sorry, she had been distracted, this is not her normal behavior. I warned her that this was unacceptable, and I did not want to hear this type of thing again. Then about an hour later, another conversation between the same two staff.

RN: I was just in 411. She needs a bedpan. Go put her on.

CNA: OK

Me, coming out of my office: Did you just tell her to go put a patient on a bedpan when you were in the room?

RN: NO

CNA: Yes

ME: Go put her on the bedpan yourself, then come into my office.

I usually dislike writing staff up, but this girl really deserved it.

Actually I just re-read the "wrong job title" thread and the guy is queer. Either that or a troll. If you were combing for burrs, you'll start to notice them in every post at least on that thread. I smell bait.

please also be aware that when i post here i am purposeful blunt to save time. when i am on the floor i am a team player. i am going to be a great nurse and my patients will be well cared for. i will put people on bed pans and take care of code browns all day long. but my boss better not whine about the odd bit of overtime here and there.....

there's blunt -- i can't say anything about blunt because it's one of my failings. and then there's know-it-all. for a brand new nurse, you seem to know everything, including how to manage a unit. i don't know about great nurse, but cognition does seem to be a challenge.

No, he's a regular. Just obstinate.

Oh man, ad hominem attacks have got to be against the TOS.......

Vespertinas, I disagreed with the "troll" thought because, after all, he's been hanging around here for some time. But I think perhaps you're right.

come one guys just give me a number here...seriously.......

lose the attitude or you won't last six months.

You never heard it because its BS....

Also I am glad to see some posters brave and intelligent enough to see the validity of some of the points I was making.......encouraging....

Mission accomplished.

I doubt that was your initial intention, as I've seen and engaged with you on a previous post in which your personality came on a bit strong. I recall it was related to an idealistic snipe at an individual's work ethic, which I challenged considering you aren't a nurse.

I would also suggest refraining from attributing titles to yourself which you have yet to earn - a big no no in the field (which I assume you know).

For the record I did my fiirst day of my preceptorship today. Most of it was spent putting patients on and off bed pans and the associated cleaning. In between I also picked up a previously undiagnosed case of AFIB in another patient which was confirmed via ECG......

When I am not busy I have no trouble doing tech work. But I will be damned if I am gonna do it while they are out smoking or hiding back in the supply room......ya know?

We should all bow down and defer to your infinite experience and wisdom!

Why torture yourself with nursing when you are the next Dr. House?

Oh, I wouldn't be concerned with ad hominem attacks....not when you've just admitted to baiting, much as a troll would do (but of course, you aren't one).

Then again, we also know it was never your intention initially, and it's not your "posting style". But it does seem that when faced with not being able to prove yourself right, you will say "see, I meant to do this to prove a point". Mission Obvious.

No offense, but you might wanna use another word besides queer...I got waht you meant but it took me a minute....

I do toilet patients. I also put them on the bedpan, bathe and shave them, and feed them. I spend my mornings on the unit because I feel that I should not expect staff to do anything I won't do myself. And I don't rule, I lead.

annnnnd...here is urbandictionary's definition of troll:

"One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument."

I love you Ruby I hope you know that. I also hope that you are on the mend and feeling better. Please know that in the real world I am a much different student nurse (soon to be registered nurse). Rest assured that if you found yourself on my unit you would be well satisfied by my care.....

I admit that I do like to have fun here. I also think that I encourage thought and greatly contribute to these forums......I also think I make people cringe, laugh, cry, scream and roll their eyes. As long as they are thinking its all good.
