OU 2019 absn (2018 applicant)

Hey! Has anyone else applied to the absn program for 2019? Or heard back yet? I applied to Lawton in the spring and to OKC for summer.

Well, looking at the thread from last year, I’m gathering that people that had their pre-req’s done definitely had an edge. And I would say lots of them had at least 3.5 GPA. But I think it also depends on the GPA’s of other people applying. All my sciences were done at university level but I did do some of the gen ed pre req’s (history and eng comp) at a community college for financial reasons.

Last 60: 3.7

Science: 4.0

Cumulative: 3.6

Hey guys! I am a current ABSN student (will be graduating in July of this year). I'm sorry y'all haven't heard back yet. That is extremely late, but doesn't surprise me. This program is so chaotic and unorganized I can't even begin to put it into words. I am thankful to get my degree in such a short period of time, but I can't say it's been the most wonderful experience when it comes to the college and professors. I don't mean to scare you off, but I believe people should be well informed. The ABSN students seem to get the leftovers and traditional students always take precedence. There is so much confusion and ABSN students are talked down about due to our expecting and wanting better/more. There are a handful of amazing professors that will do everything in their power to help you succeed, but the others couldn't care less and have no idea how to teach.

The overall theme of the program and OUHSC in general is disorganized. It's frustrating, but if you can tough that out it is worth getting the degree in 14 months. That's the only pro haha.

I hope all of y'all get accepted to the program you want and become terrific nurses! Good luck everybody!

@haleyreese23 Thanks for being frank! It's a little discouraging to hear, but I certainly appreciate the heads up.

I gave up looking for the "perfect program" a looooong time ago, and at this point I just value a program that will get me in and out quickly.

Regardless of the issues you encountered, do you overall feel like you are prepared for working as an RN? Or the NCLEX? What is it that makes you feel like the ABSN program is getting the leftovers?

Congrats on almost being finished! I'm sure everyone reading is grateful for your input ?

That makes me so sad! This is my dream school! I have to know though, does nursing school require you to change your view of thinking? I’ve read that you have to look at nursing school and nursing in a completely different light. The questions on tests are harder, decisions are harder, even finding the best study method is harder! I need to know that it’s possible to succeed! I’m just super nervous!

I’m certainly not trying to downplay haleyreeces’ experience, but someone had asked about people’s experiences in the thread from last year and this was the response that was posted from someone else that’s currently in the program:

“In terms of general information about my experience so far, the program is very doable. We're finishing up what seems like the actual science-behind-nursing classes right now: pharmacology and acute and chronic. It's humbling and it takes up much of your time, but if you're willing to work, most everyone will be able to get through the program. The majority of the faculty and staff are there to help you succeed with only a few there to just collect paychecks. The workload isn't too insanely difficult but managing time is of the utmost importance. Your peers are your best friends throughout the program. You spend a lot of time together. Clinicals have been by far the best experience because for me, I came from a business background and just being in the middle of a health care setting has been very fun. After only 7 months, we're halfway there to being nurses which is fun, exciting and terrifying. You'll understand why this time next year.”

Everyone has their own perspective and I think it’s important to move forward not expecting things to be perfect but hopefully we can have a good attitude and make it the best experience for each of us! I’m trying to keep this positive outlook, anyway.

At the Nursing School Sneak Peak back on Feb 18th, they said they were hoping to get the admission decisions out within the next 3 weeks (right about mid-March like the website says). Has anyone heard any different?

They also said ABSN decisions will be released before the traditional program since the accelerated students start in the summer.

Also, just a general question to the public, did anyone struggle with Gen Chem???? I feel like an idiot in this class! I am a smart person and I pride myself on my organization skills, but this class seems too theoretical for me! I literally sweat while my professor is writing math problems!

I minored in chemistry and felt like that in all of my chem classes.

Anyone else have kids? I’m starting to stress a little about missing out on 2 summers with my kids with no breaks.
