Organic Chemistry

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Anyone have any advice on how to make it through? I am having such a struggle. I thought maybe someone would have that magic thought and I would be able to get out of that class with the grade I need. Thanks:wink2:

I didn't take Organic, but I did take General Chem.

My two most important bits of advice are to spend as much time as you can with your school's tutoring center, and to work as many problems as possible.

Chem is hard.....good luck!

I'm in organic this semester too. You really need to go to the tutoring sessions and work the problems. There's no other way around it.

Good luck!

I agree with the above posters, get tutoring before it's too late.

Do you have to take Organic for nursing, then? My roommate and a lot of my friends were Pharmacy majors, they had to take it and I was so grateful it wasn't a Nursing requirement. Gotta agree with the tutoring and practice, though. It's the only way to make it through any tough class.

Organic is required because I'm applying to a BSN program. Many of the ADN students required only basic chem.

I took two semesters of it. The best way through it is practice, practice, practice….

And let me say this - you'll be surprised at how HANDY it is...I'm sitting Micro right now and a lot of the intro stuff has a LOT of organic chem in it. You'll find out you know a lot of in-depth information about the material. I was quite surprised - and pleased.

All programs are different. There are some BSN programs that only require 1 semester of General, while a few ADN programs around where I live reqire Organic, or no chem at all.

Anyway....I searched the internet for what ever topic I was having trouble with....for quizzes, tutorials, etc.

I worked hundreds of problems during my 8-week, accellerated class.

It was tough, but can be done. Think positive, get help, and again, work as many problems as you can. (Go above and beyond the required assignments, and eventually, it should come to you easier!)

Hi,

I took Organic a couple of semesters ago. It took some brain-games on my part (convincing myself that I could do Orgo) and a lot of practice. I took the advice of a friend of mine - she said to get the basics down pat and not fall behind. It seemed to work. I also drew diagrams until I knew them all and carried flash cards with me everywhere. You just have to stay with it. You'll get it. Also, like everyone else said, the tutoring center at your school is a great resource. Good luck!

here are some links that might help you. however, like the other posters, i would advise you to get tutoring help and to get caught up. chemistry is one of those subjects where each step builds on the one before it. if you can't get off step one, you're in trouble. when it comes to any of the math problems you have to practice working them.

http://regentsprep.org/regents/chem/onlineresources/index.cfm - this is an online resource with many links to all kinds of help with chemical subjects on a website for preparing for the new york regent's exam in high school chemistry. within the links are explanations of the topics as well as some worksheets with answers, particularly in solving equations.

http://www.sparknotes.com/chemistry/ - this is spark notes chemistry study guides. you link into the subjects in chemistry you are looking for information on. also includes some practice problems with answers within the various sections.

Love that Sparknotes website. Thanks for the info. :)

I will also agree with the tutoring. Also study the problems at the ends of the chapters and use the cd (if your book comes with one).

Good luck!
