According to my Core Course plan for the RN program, I have to take one class from the "Area C". There are around 15 different choices including World Literature, British Literature, Philosophy, Art Appreciation, and World Religion. I personally thought World Religion would help me understand patients from different religious backgrounds. After speaking with the advisor (Core advisor not the Nursing advisor) she said that Philosophy will look better on my records. Anyone have an advice to offer??

If I was in your situation, I would choose what interests me. I took Philosophy and I thought it helped me to understand how life and death are viewed, which would help with working with patients. Courses that are fun (to you) definitely lighten your load.

I took World Religions and LOVED it. It was an amazing and insightful class. I think I am now a better person...and I am starting nursing school this fall so I don't think they cared to much that I did not take Philosophy (plus I heard it was hard and boring). Let us know what you decide. I always wonder what the reasoning is behind peoples choice on their humanities course.

I took a modern Philosophy class and loved it!! But then again I like to argue and can see both sides of an arguement.
I also think that World Religion would be a very intersting class.
I would pick whichever one you think that you would enjoy more. In my opinion they both look good, so go with your gut on this one.

Do you have any friends in the upper classes? Ask if they had any professors that they found to be outstanding. Middle Eastern Studies was an option I had in my senior year that I would have had NO intrest in exploring but several seniors I knew said professor *** was great. They were right. To this day it was one of my favorite classes. On the other hand I took African Studies (the other half of my Eastern Civ. requirement) and the professor was one of the worst I have ever had- the whole course was torture- not something I needed with senior clinicals and papers due. I found phylosophy to be an enjoyable class. Most of the peers took ethics and hated it. It is largely the quality of the instructor and you personal taste that will help you decide this choice.

I took Early World Lit and loved it. Art History is another fun one.
If cultural anthropology is on the list, take that. I found it very interesting and helpful in developing an understanding of other's customs.

Everybody is different, but my personal approach is that I take what I truly genuinely want to learn about. I will learn many many things on my road to becoming a nurse, but there are things outside of nursing that fascinates me as well, and since I have to I would love to take courses in that field.

Ditto this. I'm taking a music fundamentals class, first because it interests me, and second, because I already know a lot about music, and am praying for an easy A. Sounds bad, but I need it, since I'm carrying some not-so-stellar grades from about 10 years ago. I'll likely take a philosophy class later down the road, too though, but only because, again, it interests me. Ethics sounds like a good one too, but we have an ethics class already included in the degree plan I'm applying to. If you work in a very diverse area, the World Religion class could be helpful, or maybe just a basic World Culture class. Either way, I think you should decide first based on what interests you, and then base your decision on how it will help you in your career. It won't look so great if you're bored to tears and don't get a good grade.
Good luck!

I have never met a school advisor/counselor that knew what they were talking about. World Religions looks great on a Nursing App because they teach you all that in school anyhow and it shows your experience with the topic and your cultural awareness.. Plus, it interests you. Schools look at grades more than what was taken... Spanish and any type of communication are sure bets though.
