Ontario Second-Entry Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone!

This is super early to talk about applying to nursing school for 2016, but it's always better to be well-prepared! Let's share some thoughts and help each other out!

I am re-applying to nursing schools as I did not get in last year, and planning to enroll to more courses for pre-reqs and to increase my GPA (I graduated with a B.A.)hopefully this year will be much better and with luck!!!!

I have a few universities in mind to apply -

  1. University of Toronto
  2. York
  3. Nipissing
  4. Western
  5. Queen's
  6. McMaster

Should I apply to more? Which one should I apply? I am super eager to enter the program and I failed once, failing twice is not allowed!

Feel Free to give me suggestions or ask questions! Here is a link I found online listing most of the second entry nursing programs.

Best wishes to everyone! Good Luck!

Good luck to all. It can be a stressfuk process (as I experienced last year).

For humber I was offered and I had a 3.2 GPA last 2 years. I went with nipissing because it's a very innovative and self directed program, plus we get more clinical hours (202.5 per semester and 303.75 for consolidation).

My advice to others would be to consider your learning style and try to match it with a program. You'll be much happier for the 2 years if you do.

Hi shadowrook,

Would you mind sharing your cGPA? Did you apply to other nursing schools beside Humber?

Hi! Nope, working through the chapters... It'd be nice to "know someone" in the class, I think it'd be super helpful to talk about the material to help remember it... I wish there was a message board for all the students in the class to communicate with one another.

Actually, I don't think you see it... You put in the individual's email address and it gets sent to them. I actually may not follow through with my app to UofT..... in which case I will forward the form to myself to see what they ask and then I can tell you.

Hey, do you mind sharing how your experience with Nipissing has been? Also, do they look at CGPA or just GPA in the last two years?

Hi mhjm93,

What I did was that I converted the grades I got to the OMSAS scale. Then I multiplied the OMSAS grade by the credit weight (so 3, 6 or 9) and then I added them all up. Once you get the total you divide it by 60 (credits), that gives you the GPA for the last two years. I hope we get into Humber!!

Hey!

Congrats on getting into two nursing schools, that's awesome!

I am interested in the program at Humber and i was wondering when you applied (early or late?) and were you ever put on a wait list?

I'm afraid my late application (few days ago) will put me at a disadvantage, since admissions are on a rolling basis.

Also, how are you finding Nursing school so far? Hope all is well :)

Just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck, and hopefully we all get into the schools of our choice!

Hoping we can all spread positivity in this thread, since the competitive nature of all these second entry nursing programs are stressful enough!

Hi! i am also taking BIOL235. I desperately miss the classroom environment. Also doing MATH215 but it is currently taking a backseat to A&P. I'm currently working through part 2 as well! Good luck! :)

Hey guys,

I'm currently in my last year of the second entry program at UNB/Humber so if you have any questions at all let me know! :)

Heyy! I'm pretty sure all of us have questions for you so I'll start it off!

1) what was your gpa in your last 60 credits?

2) when did you get accepted to the program

3) were there any other schools toy applied too? If yes, which schools?

4) how are you enjoying the program so far? Any pros or cons?

1) I honestly don't even remember my gpa from my previous degree haha I think my cumulative was around a B+ and last two years around an A-?

2) I got accepted in April I think? They do rolling admissions so people could be admitted all the way until late in the summer as people accept/decline their admissions for other schools.

3) I applied to the Western, Trent, York and Queens accelerated programs also. There was a mix-up with my transcript from my previous degree and the official transcript didn't get sent to those programs until after their deadlines. I was basically told that I would have to wait a whole year because the transcript wasn't "official" yet. Humber accepted me with the "unofficial" transcript and just required me to send in the official when it was available.

4) I'm enjoying the program quite a bit! There are some courses that I really love and it's nice to be learning about stuff that I'm interested in. Clinical for the most part is good here...I think we get more total clinical hours than any other program and theres a pretty wide variety of placements across Toronto and the GTA to pick from. I think the biggest con would be how completely unorganized the administration can be at times. It can be pretty hard to get an answer to a simple question because they just seem to have no clue what is going on.
