Ontario Second-Entry Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone!

This is super early to talk about applying to nursing school for 2016, but it's always better to be well-prepared! Let's share some thoughts and help each other out!

I am re-applying to nursing schools as I did not get in last year, and planning to enroll to more courses for pre-reqs and to increase my GPA (I graduated with a B.A.)hopefully this year will be much better and with luck!!!!

I have a few universities in mind to apply -

  1. University of Toronto
  2. York
  3. Nipissing
  4. Western
  5. Queen's
  6. McMaster

Should I apply to more? Which one should I apply? I am super eager to enter the program and I failed once, failing twice is not allowed!

Feel Free to give me suggestions or ask questions! Here is a link I found online listing most of the second entry nursing programs.

Best wishes to everyone! Good Luck!

1) I honestly don't even remember my gpa from my previous degree haha I think my cumulative was around a B+ and last two years around an A-?

2) I got accepted in April I think? They do rolling admissions so people could be admitted all the way until late in the summer as people accept/decline their admissions for other schools.

3) I applied to the Western, Trent, York and Queens accelerated programs also. There was a mix-up with my transcript from my previous degree and the official transcript didn't get sent to those programs until after their deadlines. I was basically told that I would have to wait a whole year because the transcript wasn't "official" yet. Humber accepted me with the "unofficial" transcript and just required me to send in the official when it was available.

4) I'm enjoying the program quite a bit! There are some courses that I really love and it's nice to be learning about stuff that I'm interested in. Clinical for the most part is good here...I think we get more total clinical hours than any other program and theres a pretty wide variety of placements across Toronto and the GTA to pick from. I think the biggest con would be how completely unorganized the administration can be at times. It can be pretty hard to get an answer to a simple question because they just seem to have no clue what is going on.[/quote

Thank you for helping us out vxd4722! Did you get accepted to Trent?

I didn't because of the mix up with my transcript. They basically told me I could either wait until my transcript was "official" and see if there were still any spots available then (which there probably wouldn't have been), take an acceptance for a general BSc degree for a year then transfer into the compressed program the next year (which I didn't want to do because I already have a BSc and it would have been a waste of time and money...) or wait and apply all over again the next year.

Hey Guys,

Hi everyone!

I applied to UofT and York this year (for September 2016 start), 2nd entry nursing, and have a question I was hoping some veterans of this process could help me with.

York says it is fine to continue working on your prerequisites even through the summer of the year you hope to start nursing. UofT says applicants are "encouraged" to have courses done by May.

Does anyone know if it's actually possible (even if rare) to be accepted to UofT with an outstanding prerequisite as of May? I am planning to take anatomy+physiology this summer (which will complete my prereqs).... I am wondering if my application to UofT was all for naught.

I did email them to ask and they said they couldn't say one way or another.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey

Yea my gpa was 3.7 for the last 2yrs...dont know what the cutoff is this year ..

Hi how are you finding the program so far? I got accepted and im unsure if nursing is for me. Do u you live in campus? Is it possible to do a job while going to school? Let me know! Thanx

Does anyone know when York, western or mcMaster start sending out responses? I know this year they require the casper and I haven't written it yet so maybe that might be the reason for the delay.

Which school did you get accepted to ?

Hey everyone.

I've been lurking this thread, but haven't posted yet.

Just wanted to say that I was rejected from Ottawa U's second entry program - got the email on Saturday :(. I have a 3.78 CGPA, a 3.88 SGPA, and an A in all the prereqs. I think what hurt my application is the fact that my A&P courses are still in progress (BIOL235 at Athabasca and ANP1107 at Ottawa U), and I don't really have any other science courses for them to look at (I've heard the schools offering second entry programs are very hesitant to give out conditional acceptances to applicants who don't already have a strong background in science).

I was about to apply to Western, but I'm wondering if it's worth forking out the application fee if my only science courses are still in progress.

Super bummed out about it all, but I'm not giving up. Good luck to the rest of you guys! :)

Hey guys! Long-time lurker too lol. I got rejected by uOttawa this weekend :( I emailed the admin and they said the cut off was 83%, but they only took 12 students! What a huge drop from last year =_=

I've thankfully applied to other schools too (haven't heard from any yet). Wish I applied to more, but I was hoping to get into uOttawa (stupid I know :p):

McMaster

Queens

Western

Trent

My cgpa is lower than I want it to be, 8.4cgpa. This will increase after this semester as I'm retaking a few courses that I did poorly in. Good Luck everyone!
