Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2020

World Canada CA Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey, I used to creep these forums for the past few years and they helped affirm my decision to apply to nursing school for Fall 2020. I didn't see one started for next year so I thought, why not start one?

I graduated a while back so I'm a bit older, but my top three choices are:

1. Queen's

2. McMaster

3. York

4. Humber-UNB

I’m an RPN applying to Trent’s compressed program. I have a 3.8 GPA from Fleming. Writing the Casper tomorrow.

Hi! U of T nursing first year here. Here to help you guys answer any questions you may have about the u of t nursing application process or the program itself. Good luck you guys ❤️

Hi!! How are you liking the program? Is it more theory-based or would you say you get a decent amount of hands-on experience?

Also - I know they calculate your average based on your last 5.0 credits. I took some courses in the summer so I have a total of 4.5 credits from that and my first semester in fourth year. Do you know if they would take the grade for my last 0.5 credit from the highest or lowest grade in my second semester of third year, or the average?

Thanks so much! I really hope I get in!

Instead of selecting one course from your past semester, they will include the whole 3rd year second semester (even through it goes over 5.0). I asked the same question to ******* and she said 5.0 is just a minimum to calculate!

Okay that's so helpful to know! Thank you so much!

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone applying to U of T second entry could pm me the supplementary questions? I submitted my ouac application yesterday and would like a bit more time to work on the supp. application.

Thank you!

Hey everyone! Is anyone applying to Nipissing's SPP program for Fall 2020?

I made a new post specifically for this program because there are so many components involved in the application so it would be nice to have a community of people to discuss the process with. Feel free to follow it. Here is the link:

Hi!

I'm in the same boat as the 2 posts above! Would anyone also be able to PM me the supplementary questions for UofT?

I'd really appreciate it, thanks!

Hi! How are you liking the program so far? Would you say that doing nursing related research projects is doable in first year? I've read a little bit about their Summer Research program (very interested), but I heard not a lot of people get involved--why do you think so? Is it very competitive?

As for the application process--what do you think made you stand out from the pool of applicants? Do you have any advice as to how to be very personal in the supplementary apps without sounding cliched?

I apologize for bombarding you with questions, but I'm very excited to be applying and really hoping I get in, hah.

Hi! sorry for the late reply.

I am loving the program so far. My classmates are extremely kind, welcoming, supportive and understanding. Most of the professors will go the extra mile to make sure you feel supported and validated. However, the program itself is extremely intense. Like many of my classmates, I still struggle with balancing clinicals, school work and my social life.

I am aware that there is a summer research program, but to be honest, most people in my year are more interested in getting an externship position in the summer. I think it's because bedside nursing is a lot more exciting than research, and research is also not as useful as having clinical experience when it comes to applying for real jobs after graduation.

I applied to Bloomberg with a 4.0 (on the U of T gpa scale). I wasn't involved in a lot of e/c, but the ones I was involved in, I took them very seriously. For example, I started a flu prevention/education program at a community centre.

When it comes to your personal essays, my advice is to think about what qualities YOU think a nurse should have. Also please be yourself and think about why you wanna be a nurse.

Good luck!

Hi! I love the program! The people, the professors, the clinical experience... everything! However, it is very intense and I would be lying if I said that I wasn't struggling. The program itself is mostly theory-based. But we have clinicals every thursday/friday for 8 hrs a day this semester, so plenty of time to practice your clinical skills!

Good luck! I hope you get in too,

Hi there!

I'm also a 2nd year student in U of T's program and I was in the Summer Research Program. Although externships are very popular as well (I applied to both) the research positions are still competitive as there were only ~15 positions this summer but many more applicants. Although it's definitely more of a desk job than bedside nursing I still found it very valuable! I was able to learn about the research process, I'll be a co-author on an upcoming publication, I made a good connection with my supervisor who does research in my area of interest and I was able to continue on in a casual work-study position.

I think that the chances of getting a position depend on how many applicants there are and how 'popular' your preferred research topics are. For example, I know some students who interviewed for the same job but didn't get the position, whereas I was able to get my position after a brief discussion with no prior research experience.

Let me know if you have any questions about the summer research or the nursing program in general! ?

Hi all!

When applying to the McMaster program, the deadline is February 1st as stated on their website and the next steps just says complete CASPer test (not by a specific date) however I got a CASPer test date for February 11th. Is this an issue?
