Hi guys - I have several prerequisite courses I still need to take before I can begin my direct-entry NP program, and rather than wait until the summer semester to register for the classes, I was wondering if any of you guys know of programs online (or locally - I live in the Boston area) where I can start taking courses mid-semester. Of course, I am thinking more of the self-study courses like statistics, and would not expect to be able to do this for a class requiring a lab (like anatomy and physiology).
The online schools I have researched so far all seem to follow the standard semester dates and registration (Jan-May/June), however I was hoping there would be schools (community colleges) that would allow you to complete the courses online at any point, as long as you do what is required of you.
I also would like to keep costs down for the prereqs since I will be paying a lot for school, so an online community college would be great!
Thanks in advance for your help. This board has been such a wonderful resource!

I recommend Edukan...you can search on here and see A LOT of pre nursing students use this online college and the classes transfer 100%. They offer sessions...and session 3 is getting ready to start on monday..there are some classes still available..so I would act fast since they have to be paid for by tomorrow.
they in fact offer micro w/lab, AP 1, AP 2 w/lab, biology w/lab..chemistry ect....and hte labs are online..you do not have to attend a campus.
its a flat fee of 125 a credit regardless of residence.
Its actually an online college put together by 6 community colleges in kansas. You pick one of the six colleges as your "home college" when you request transcripts for the courses taken at edukan they will come from the college you picked..it wont say online or anything like that so your classes wont be discriminated against (as some colleges look down on online classes) the classes are taught by the instructors from the 6 community colleges.
Im taking 12 credits during this session 3 including microbiology.

Hi choco80,
I also live in the Boston area and have taken online courses. I have used two universities based on convience for me. Bunkerhill has online A&P but lab is usually on Saturdays. I took stats and human growth and development online through them. Two courses for around 700 dollars... great price. I took Nutrition at Northeastern and was very impressed with their set up - - more so then Bunkerhill. The online course was very interactive and the professor was great. More expensive at 950 I think? I do know that they run A&P 1, 2, 3 (only downside is they break it up into 3 courses) starting April 7th I think? They run it through the summer. You can take the lecture part online and the lab either meets 3x a week or once on Saturdays.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
CNM - Thanks for the advice re: Edukan, I will definitely look into it! That is definitely a great deal, and I've never heard of an online lab - how do they manage to do that, since labs are generally very practical?
Ames - Thanks for the feedback re: BHCC, since this is where I was planning on taking many of my prereqs in the summer. I didn't know the A&P labs were on Sat (I thought the schedule said something about it being on Tues or Thurs, Sat is a very different story, especially since I have a child). It is crazy that NEU divides it up to 3x a week - a bit impractical for someone traveling from north of the city like me, which is a shame because I have no doubt they do a great job with the teaching. Have you taken any other courses online?
Thanks so much for your help!
I could be wrong re: Saturday labs but I know that was an option in the fall. I'm not sure how they do it in the summer. Northeastern's set up is definitely ridiculous... a lab option for 3 days a week or one day a week... it doesn't really add up. I may be looking into A&P1 at BHCC over the summer. MGH Institue of Health Professions also offers all science pre-reqs online but is really $$$... but A&P all online is tempting..
I took Nutrition - Northeastern.
Human Growth & Dev /STATS - Bunker Hill.

Has anyone taken the NLN exam for microbiology? I too am taking prereq courses in the Boston area. I am studying on my own, trying to escape the lab:( by testing out. (Barron's E-Z Microbiology) Any thoughts?
Also, NLN offers pharmacology, stats, and nutrition.

Ask if the school(s) you are applying to accepts straighterline.com credits. They have most of the maths, english and a couple of the science prereqs on straighterline.com. Also ask if you can CLEP or DSST exam your way out of a couple of prereqs as well.
