100% Online RN-BSN

Published

I have been looking for schools that are 100% online as far as lecture, clinical, discussion, etc go, but am coming up short on my findings. To all of you fellow Allnurses.com members, are you aware of any schools that are completely done online? Or, if you are a student/graduate from one, I would LOVE to talk with you.

Thanks!

Thanks dhyser and Tweety for the info. I will go over to the distance learning forum for more info. Tweety thanks for the insight on how the "clinicals" work. I haven't received too much info on this and I am so glad to have info from someone who has been through this. Once again, I am so happy I joined Allnurses!

My DNS and I were talking about an online Masters program. She's pushing me to go through Excelsior with her, because they will waive clinicals for her 15+ years experience.......not for me though, I'm still too green.

My 2 cents worth.

Chamberlain and University Of Phoenix. I have been told are all 100% Rn to BSN Chamberlain says that as an RN you alreay have the clinical apsect of the Nursing skills and a licence. The BSN part is just al lot of additional book work and paper writing and general education classes for the Bach. part

OP, check the Student forums. There is a distance learning forum there that is very helpful.

There are quite a few 100% online programs. These programs assume you are working, and that is what they consider clinicals. Some have you do projects and these projects can be giving employee inservices, shadowing a coworker in a different area for a day etc. RN to BSN programs tend to be heavier on papers and projects rather than on clinicals and tests, unlike primary nursing programs.

I'm researching online programs myself at this time. The important thing seems to be checking if the program you're interested in is accredited by either of the national accredidation groups.

These are the programs that I've been looking at that are 100% online or close to it.

Drexel university

Florida College of Health Sciences-you do shadowing, but it can be completed at your workplace, I think.

Jacksonville University

South University

There are many more. 100% online to me means you don't have to travel to the college in question..which for me is enough of a bonus!

I am at Oakland University in Michigan. My RN-BSN is completely online. I don't recommend taking chemistry (organic) online but it has been done and several people have done it this way. I will be completing my degree this spring. There is no clinical aspect of the program. Any questions feel free to PM me!

University of Northern Colorado offers a 100% online RN-BSN program.

Be aware that once you have your RN license in hand, then it is easier to get things done. But if you do not have the RN training and license, then you are not going to find any programs that do not have some clinical component to them.

Even U of P has a clinical component, but you are usually able to complete it where you are currently working. You have to submit papers and documentation of what you have done, but do not go with a group to clinicals, and it is done on your time, not the schools.

You got my hopes up here! I went on their site and and they say they do require a clinical component for Nur 475

"Recognizing the RN's prior education and professional experience, there is only one clinical course required."

Why would you need any clinical time if the program is RN to BSN. Any RN license holder would already be a nurse who had clinicals and passed NCLEX examination. The rest of a BSN is basically paperwork. The only outside requirements I have is career exploration and a masters level management class(which I set up with a manager). Other than that there would be no reason it couldn't be online.

The definition of "clinicals" is different in RN to BSN programs. It's understood that a working RN has been through basic clinicals. But NLN approved RN to BSN programs must have additional clinical hours, usually in community health and management, clinicals that aren't required in ADN programs (though many of them do have this type of component). How those online schools conduct these clinicals varies from school to school.

A good amount of RN to BSN programs also give acedemic credit for experience as a working RN.

Schools that do not have NLN obviously don't follow those requirements and may not have any "clinicals" at all.

It's hard to shake the definition we have of "clinicals" as being trotting off to take a patient assignment with an instructor nearby because in RN to BSN programs it's not that at all.

Good point, I hadn't considered my public health, career exploration or management (shadow) a type of clinical. I suppose it is. Thanks
