Online Rn to Bsn as schools as good as brick and mortar?

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

Does anyone think that online Rn to Bsn programs might be considered inferior by nurse recruiters?

I know it should not be that way.

I am hearing horror stories of grads of other professions who have degrees obtained online but can not find jobs.

Lots of recruiters of other professions even admit to it.

I think many people have this perception that online schools are not as vigorous as brick and mortar schools.

Of course, there is so much variety of online schools.

Non profit, schools that are regionally accredited but have no brick and mortar campus()

For profit schools that are regionally accredited(Chamberlain) with a brick and mortar campus.

Some are non profit with a brick and mortar campus but not accredited(my old Adn school just started an Rn to Bsn program but it is not accredited yet. The Adn was Acen accredited since the late 60's). If i start there in Sept i would be in the 1st Rn to Bsn class to graduate from the school.

Wgu is giving me a vibe of "We accept anyone",

WHy? I know for a FACT i failed the entrance exam, but the recruiter said i passed.

Hospitals still want experienced nurses. I am starting to see ads again for EXPERIENCED REGISTERED NURSES but no mention of type of degree. Maybe they are starting to see that experience matters. My hospital has a lot of "new grads" and we have had tons of problems with that.

Here is what's going to happen if you build your career around pleasing future employers and not your professional competence:

HR: "You don't have the BSN."

You get the BSN

HR: "You don't have experience/recent experience"

You get the experience

HR: "You don't have experience in X"

You get experience in X

HR: "Your overqualified"

It's no wonder that administration has little respect for nurses, we can't even respect each other. We're all too busy being butt hurt over where people got their degrees instead of encouraging each other to be proud of what we've all accomplished. Brick and mortar, online, it's irrelevant because at the end of the day it doesn't define what you know.

Be proud of wherever you went for your education but never think that it makes you better than someone else.

Nope,not really.

Hospitals in this area hire new grad Bsn's over experienced ADN's.

I guess it varies by the area. Every job posting, and emails I receive for open houses says they're looking for experienced nurses. No mention of BSN needed, although I am sure it will help when deciding between experienced candidates.

Well then, you should have no difficulty getting a job in a hospital once you finish your BSN, because if they really prefer brand new inexperienced BSNs over ADNs with experience, you will be a shoo-in, as a BSN who has several years of experience.

HA,seems great to me.

I do not have to try hard...but that is the problem.

Soon word will get out(it actually has btw hence the reason for this thread) that WGU is an easy program, and soon into the garbage the resume goes by recruiters who wont take it seriously.

Kind of a repeat of Phoenix University

So you *are* applying to , even though you think it's regarded as a joke program?

What?! Now they're picking apart HOW you got your BSN, separating RN/BSN from straight 4 year education? Where does it end. Ugh.

Yes. I had it told to my face by a recruiter from NYU Langone university hospital at a job fair. Ironic since NYU has a RN-BSN program.

I did an online RN to BSN. I went to chamberlain. I then got into an NP program at a regular (and big) university. There was a second place I started an application at....and hey hounded me to finish. This second place was a regular university as well.

The online RN to BSN has not hurt me at all.

So you *are* applying to WGU, even though you think it's regarded as a joke program?

Yes,i cant afford to spend x amt of money on more expensive programs.

Word has got out it is an easy program,so how does that translate to joke program?

WGU does not require the entrance exam for RN to BSN students. Decision was made in mid April i believe.

I did not even have to take it!

Now,I actually passed but i know for sure i failed.

But the enrollment counselor said i passed anyway.

That raised red flags for me.

He could not tell me my score.

way to raise the bar .

If I were working as a nurse by the time I decide to pursue a BSN, I would honestly do the online route. There would be no reason for me to do otherwise. I would have completed my ADN degree in person and a RN with either a ADN or BSN education is still an RN. So I don't see what the problem is here...?

choose wisely. you get what you pay for.
