UH Manoa BSN Fall 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello all!

I am a transfer student moving to Hawaii next month with my husband, he's military so we'll be stationed there for 4 years. I will be applying to UH Manoa's BSN program for Fall 2018. I have yet to see other threads for this cohort and was hoping I'd get an idea of my chances to get into the program. I know that it is incredibly competitive, so I have my fingers crossed that I will get into the program!

I have an overall GPA of 3.92

cGPA 3.88 (I only have one B in CHEM, the rest all A's)

I have 11 of 12 pre-req's completed except for Public Speech, which they just added. I have however taken Communications.

TEAS score is pending, I'm currently studying for it and am taking it in two weeks! I am super nervous.

I am not a resident of HI so unfortunately there's no point in applying to KCC, I just found out they do not accept non-residents. I have put so much effort into trying to finish my Nursing degree while moving around and am just desperate to get into UH! Anyone else out there applying? I'd love some feedback!

Congrats!! Did they email the people who got in like last year??

I didn't receive an email, I don't believe they'll be sending one. So far the letter is all I've received!

Congrats to you! I got an acceptance letter for UHM on Wednesday too. Just curious, did anyone also apply at KCC's ADN? I got into both programs and am trying to decide which one to go with.

@jules_mcd I only applied to Manoa, I want my BSN right away. I hear KCC is a great program. And you can always apply to Manoa to get your BSN after?

@mlara, I totally understand wanting to get your BSN right away! Yes, KCC ADN grads can do a direct transfer to get their BSN at UH. I believe you can transfer 2x/year, and there's about a semester of waiting in between. I think I might go with KCC, since I'd get the same degree in the end just to save about $20K! Tough choice, though.

Hi everyone.

I also applied to the BSN program at UH Manoa for Fall 2018. Even though the majority of the posts on here are acceptance stories. I feel as if my story of not getting in as well as representing a few others SHOULD be HEARD if you really want to understand the structure of getting accepted into nursing school at UH or anywhere else in Hawaii.

Right off the bat, I will tell you it is a COMPETITION when you want to get accepted to UH nursing school. ALSO in LIFE in general, not everyone will get a job, and also sometimes the people who you might not EXPECT get the JOB other than you! They could be from another STATE, and you'd have to make room for them whether you like it or not.

Having done prereqs at the University to only realize you have to wait again next year, showed this to me and my fellow LOCAL friends who applied. As LOCAL Pre-nursing students, who had to commute long hours just to attend university, WORKED EXTREMELY HARD and been told to wait another year, the feeling of not feeling good enough comes to mind.

However;

Here were my stats:

Pre-req:4.0 /cum GPA: 3.8-3.9

TEAS VI: 86 Overall

So sometimes, it's not all about GPA and test scores, which THEY TELL YOU it IS.

For MOST LOCALS Who APPLY the people telling you here, "THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS", it is quite true.

Just like the annexation or overthrow of Hawaii, this is the same with LOCALS here on getting INTO Nursing school. With the abundance of people applying from the MAINLAND WHO ONLY ARE GOING TO LIVE HERE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, or have family in the MILITARY ARE USUALLY GIVEN PRIORITY INSTEAD OF THOSE THAT LIVE HERE FOR THEIR WHOLE LIFE.

WITH MORE AND MORE APPLICANTS POOLING FROM DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE WORLD, we have to MAKE ROOM for which is PRETTY JUSTIFIED if you think about it.

In the Application, they WILL ONLY CONSIDER YOUR GPA, and TEAS/NLN.

THEREFORE, IF YOU WANT TO SHOWCASE YOUR PASSION OF WHY YOU WANT TO BE A NURSE, and your not a "PERFECT STRAIGHT A" student. In the eyes of your "beholder" (nursing admissions committee), MAKE SURE you just satisfy their PREFERENCE OF GPA and test scores beyond their expectations.

For most of us, especially me and my friends who applied, this was the case. Unlike most adults, who weren't as PRIVILEGED enough to have ALL the RESOURCES available to US, knowing how you study in comparison to others, especially for the labs, HELPS BIG TIME. Coming from the less developed and in need of education sections of the island, particularly the WEST SIDE, most of us UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLE of taking REPEAT classes just to get "A" grades in the class just so that we can satisfy our NEED of BECOMING A NURSE.

The REALITY of the matter what I try to point out is that there is a NEED for NURSES in Hawaii for a REASON.

Especially with the many NATIVE HAWAIIANS and MINORITY RACES who have been affected by TOURISM and MILITARISM on the islands, they LACK HOUSING, LACK GOOD HEALTH CARE, and MOST IMPORTANTLY a GOOD MENTAL STATE, as opposed to PEOPLE WHO COME TO STAY HERE And TAKE UP SPACE, and GIVEN the OPPORTUNITY to LIVE HERE.

So if you REALLY "NEED" to Become a NURSE, know your PURPOSE and NOT JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TO FINISH GETTING YOUR 4 YEARS DONE FAST!

Take your time, and have lots of patience, and RESPECT THE LAND YOU LIVE ON!

On the place of OAHU where we live WE have the WELCOMING SENSE OF TAKING PEOPLE IN. However, sometimes this WELCOMINGNESS can Be TAKEN ADVANTAGE of, which many people SHOULD CONSIDER.

Overall, be patient and mindful of the decision you make when pursuing a degree in nursing.

Currently, I'm geared to try and STILL PURSUE a NURSING DEGREE here on the ISLAND. As that it is in my thought and need of BECOMING a future NURSE in the field of CANCER to help the community of Oahu especially the local people who can't even afford basic needs.

At the end of the day, it's not where you go, its how you get to WHY YOU WANT TO BE A NURSE.

But yeah, to anyone ESPECIALLY LOCALS who LIVED on the ISLAND and are considering UH MANOA for Pre-NURSING. I hope this helps and best of luck.

JUST Remember, its TOUGH, but hopefully, after what I relayed to you, it's an advantage ahead of time of now knowing HOW THE FATE of your dreams, aspirations, and goals is SET UP. Which is why you when they say COLLEGE is TOUGH, you YOURSELF HAVE TO BE to be especially getting your degree as future nurses!

To those that did get admitted, CONGRATULATIONS! that is a BIG OPPORTUNITY YOU HAVE DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED.

Also if you didn't get admitted as well, or if anyone on this forum has anything they want to talk about let me know your thoughts or feelings. I Hope to hear from you guys! Also, keep your head held high, and have a good spring break!

Best regards,

"WE WILL ALL BE NURSES!!!", :) - quoted also by a friend. lol

Manoa was my only option considering that I'm not a resident and I have limited time on the island. If I had the option to save money I'd probably go for it. I may very likely have to take out some loans to pay for tuition and expenses and I'm not happy about it. Lol

Sorry for not being active, but I think my letter got lost in the mail haha! I went to see the prenursing advisor today and I got my letter of acceptance :)

Congrats!! We're going to be classmates!

Hi I've also got a question myself since i'm also interested in the program, is it a good idea to apply with my 16 credits (including the phyl and microbiology courses) for next year fall and have the rest of my prereqs done right before the program? Or do people usually get accepted when they finish everything? Btw goodluck with nursing everyone!
