One thing I'd wish I'd known before going to the USA......

Hey all you wonderful nurses who have made the journey across the pond, or are nearly there bar the flights! I thought it might be fun/interesting/helpful if you could post something along the lines of "One thing I wish I'd done/known when going to the USA....."

It could be funny/informative or both & could encompass learning to live in the USA or work or the immigration process: whatever you think..........

You never know, it might end up as the best sticky on the site :D

Of course I can start it off (although I don't actually qualify as I'm not there, or even nearly yet) by saying "I wish I'd known how long it was going to take!":)

Now over to y'all..................

That's great to hear MW! I know you've had a lot to put up with so in that sense the very fact you're still in there fighting is an inspiration to us all!

My parents-in-law would like to add something to this thread - I wish I'd known that the bacon, bread & sausages were soooo bad!

Lol the bread is awful, do you know I have visitors coming on the 5th Oct and we sent a shopping list. I phoned yesterday and said can you slip a thick sliced loaf into you bag-I dont care if it gets squashed, lovely toast for 1 day:monkeydance:

I always tell my family to bring bread when they fly over here. I Germany we had a bakery on every corner and in a morning you can smell hot, fresh bread from your window....what a memory.

If ya'll don't mind me asking, and I don't mean this to start a debate, but why do you come to the US? I love America, think it's the greatest place to live. I'm just curious...I lived in Germany for five years and loved it. Do you come for the jobs? schooling? family? Krispy Kreme Donuts? Whatever your reasons, welcome and I appreciate the cultural diversity you bring.

Has to be the Krispy Donuts that gets my vote:monkeydance:

Seriously I lived here as a child and I always wanted to come back and live here, and be near my American Family.

Now I live 3000 miles away from my American family, and my cousin whom I love wont let me move to Ohio because she wants to come live here near me one day.

Being lonely is probably what I fear the most - many of you are coming with your families, which is great.

OMG - I'll have to start that dating scene again, won't I...

I'm here with my husband, but we have a son back home who we miss so much. Add to that, our first grand-child was born 10 weeks ago and I thought I'd cope with seeing him maybe 3 or 4 times a year, but now I'm not so sure......feels like I'm missing out on so much. Hopefully for those who are coming as a complete family, loneliness won't be an issue.

Krispy Cremes?......Mmmmmmmmmmmmm but we have those here in the UK not 10 minutes from where I live sooooooooooo no not them!

I'm coming over for the space, the freedom my kids will have in the lovely little backwater we have or house in. The BEAUTIFUL 5 bed house with pool, jacuzzi, 3 car garage, master suite at the OPPOSITE end of the house to the kids & bonus room for the kiddie's den & 650 foot of forest at the back that is State protected & can't be built on. The waterways where we can poodle up & down in a boat & swim with the manatees. For the lovely people we've already made friends with & can't wait to see more often. For the swim team my son loves to train with when he's on vacation. For Cody's Roadhouse & waffle House! (hehehe) Because of the congestion charge, the fact that certain denominations seem to take precedent over the Christian values that we used to have, the stealth taxes, the petrol - sorry gas - prices, the traffic, the lack of parking anywhere & the draconian measures the councils use to enforce their stupid parking rules.

I don't see the USA through rose tinted glasses. My best friend is USA born & bred (met her at university) & we've been annual (at least) visitors for some 25 years now both east & west coast. I know there's a downside but I know there's an up side & I want the up-side!

Why I came here:

I met my husband in Germany while he was stationed there in the US Army. We got married there and lived there for a year after we got married....until they moved him back to the US. So, as his wife I came with him

(6 years ago). At first I wanted to fly back every day, but now I am glad I am here, because I have met some great people and we have a daughter who loves it here.

i came here because i like it !!!!

[color=#483d8b]been here for over 2 years and yes sometimes have missed my family and my grandkids and my youngest daughter in particular.

[color=#483d8b]but for me i wanted a lifestyle change, sometimes things have been a hassle but for the most part its better....lots better.

[color=#483d8b]you learn to do without the uk food and make do, even forget sometimes what it is that we miss. near us there is a world market that sells heinz beans, hp sauce, foxes and mcvities biscuits, gravy granules and pataks curry. just a few bits and pieces for when you dont mind paying a fortune for it. $1:99 for a small tin of batchelors mushy peas ! $1:79 for the beans,
