I have a dear friend who went to work for an HCA hospital, despite my warnings. The hospital we were working at was doing a lot of cancelling and she needed not to be cancelled a lot. Anywayyyssss...she just emailed me about their Nurses Week Treat!
It seems that at some point during her night shift, a call went out for the nurses to come to the lobby and get some snacks...a show of appreciation for all of their nurses hard work. When she and a co-worker got to the desnigated area, the management (or whoever) had opened the vending machines and were letting the nurses take their pick of the vending items! She almost choaked! What a hoot! She has now coined a new hosital motto.."Saving lives...and saving money" How cheesy is this?

I would throw a party out of my own pocket before I would do something like that.

showing some appreciation by letting the nurses have their pick of 3 year old pop tarts or ancient Mr. Goodbars.... classy!

Nothing at my place of employment either, not even a mention of nurses week.

Although it is cheesy and cheap, its more than what we nurses got at my LTC facility.
We got nothing..not even an email, no verbal "hey thanks"..nada! Ohh but they sure are billing National Nursing Home week! They have signs up everywhere, all kinds of activities etc for residents and families oh and employees are welcome. I'd like to know who they think makes up the vast majority of the employees at a nursing home..I guess Nursing Home week trumps Nurse's Day/Week in the eyes of my employeer.

I work PRN at a HCA hospital. They had a food theme each day for nurse's week. Catered lunch one day, ice cream another, catered breakfast, pizza party...and I forgot the other day. It was very nice - the food that is...
What the OP described as a "celebration" was beyond tacky. I wonder if they loosened their chains in order to "lift" items from the vending machine before returning to the chain gang? The management of that hospital obviously thinks poorly of nurses.

WOW.. at the LTC where I work, we had a catered lunch, sandwiches, cake, fruit and dip, veggie plates, chips, sodas, and we all got a nice stainless water bottle with a quote about nurses on it.. When we entered the room all of the directors and big wigs were in there to serve us... It was very nice and it made all of us feel very appreciated.
