7-on 7-off scheduling

Published

My new job is a 7-on 7-off position where we work 7 eight-hour shifts in a row and then are off 7 days. Each rotation begins on Wednesday.

I've usually worked 12 hour shifts and a few 8 hour ones. I like 8 hours because they are truly less tiring for me.

I'm wondering if you or anyone you know has worked a 7-on 7-off type schedule and what your thoughts on the pros and cons of this type of schedule have been.

Thanks in advance! I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for the change so I can be ready for the positive as well as not-so-positive experiences coming my way.

;)

I've done 7 and 7 with 12-hour shifts before and it wasn't too bad. Gotta love that many days off in a row.

I'm sorry, but I did this a long time ago, and I just can't think of anything positive about it. I hope you far better than I did. Good luck:)

7x8=56hrs for a two week period.

56/2= 28

That's partime pay for more than a full time effort!

I wish you well and have gotta to hand it to you

Oh Agnus!

You always have a wonderful way of seeing through all the smoke and mirrors!

Yes, the 7-on 7-off job is a "part-time" position, but all the positions in the department where I want to work happen to be 7-on 7-off. Since I love the NICU and really prefer not to work anywhere else right now I'm pretty much stuck since there is only the one NICU in my area.

Thanks for helping me see my future through your clear perspective. Any other words of advice will always be welcomed!!

I don't think I would like it, I prefer my 3 12 hr shifts.

I am working my thrid night in a row...one eight hour shift and two twelves. I am dragging!!! Course the pregancy thing probably has something to do with it.

 I have been doing 7,On and 7,Off, for quite some time. My 7,On and 7,Off consist of twelve hour shifts:eek: heaven's to murgatroid:eek:  I am so used to it, that it is a very natural occurrence for me. I am starting a "New" and hopefully my Last Position on Sept. 29th or 30th where I'll be working 6,On and 8,Off. Wow, I know I will feel as though I'm stealing Money:chuckle because I will be working less shifts and being paid the same salary. Plus benefits are the same or better, and less expensive. I see Posts here frequently from nurses that get exhausted after three 12's in a row, and to most people, I know that they feel that this type scheduling is detremental to their performance. I on the other hand have been working so many twelves in a row for so many years (once worked 34 straight twelves) that I am more than used to it, I am very accustomed to "My Preferred Schedule" Having said that, I would probably NOT like working that many shifts in a row for Part-Time Pay and benefits. The bulk of my experience has been as an emergency room nurse, now that is my part-time position while my full-time position is that of "Resource Nurse" which as you know, is a management position. I am truly looking forward to being able to retire from Nursing in 2011. Please say a prayer for me that I make it. That will make 38yrs in the profession, and when I do retire there won't be any nurses to take care of me should I be hospitalized:o

Like I said, to each is own. It is doable if I plan my week making sure things are done. I can manage it. I also work nights too. That week coming off is my motivator it keeps me going. Plus I have two jobs that I work between. I would work 3 days at one and 4 at another to break the boredom and before I know it I am off again for 7 days. It is not a bad trade off! See how it goes you may really like it. :=)

Jay I admire you. I am sure you will retire fine. ;) I really believe we can condition our bodies for certain things and working like that you can. I have been working nights for so long it doesn't bother me. I am not a day person. I can function in AM but to work NEVER!!!! Keep up the good work you are an inspiration. A vacation every other week ain't that the truth, well put. ;-)

I do 8 shifts of 8 hours in a row then 6 shifts off. I love it. It's like getting a vacation every 2 weeks. This summer I took my whole 8 day stretch off so I had the 6 before and after off and ended up having 20 days off and I only used 8 vacation days. I work nites so it really is easier to do all my days on together.
