OMG.Do Nursing students really practice on eachother??

I entered "nursing school" on youtube and came across a few videos of nursing students practicing Iv's and injections on one another.I had no idea this was done in nursing school! What if a student makes a mistake and you get injured? Ok im being negative..But what if?? Are the students skillfull enough to practice on one another so early into the program??

Oh I forgot, we practiced sub-q's and transdermals on pieces of hot dogs! IMs we just did in clinicals with our instructor, on real patients.

I am sure you could refuse. Nobody in my nursing class had problems with performing invasive skills. Personally, I am good for at least 2-3 attempts on my self before throwing in the towel.

I started off in the military, so we did not have much of a choice when it came to live IV starts and such.

I remember a CRNA (shes in her late 50's) told me once that they used to knock each other out with ether and practice LMA's on each other....Talk about trust!!!

In our school we have a choice. If you don't want to be stuck (with needles), then you can decline. HOWEVER if you decline you can't stick one of your classmates with a needle, either (fair is fair). But we do (will) practice on each other, and we will have an instructor right next to us the whole time making sure we are doing everything correctly

I've been out of school for about a year now & we were allowed to practice procedures on one another....IV's, blood draws, etc. Granted I attended a smaller school in rural Georgia. That may be why we were allowed to practice such invasive procedures on each other! BTW...my veins are perfect (big, juicy, & easy to hit), so I was always being stuck by someone. People used to fight over my veins!! I have a high pain tolerance too, so I didn't scream...too loud! :)

Lots of people finish nursing school w/o practicing invasive procedures on each other . . can't imagine NG's. No way, no how. :uhoh21:

*rubs nose* I dropped an NG on my best friend... she dropped one on me. This was strictly voluntary, and in fact the whole class had to sign a waiver to allow inter-classmate procedure practise.

Practised by others on me or vice-versa:

Fingerstick glucose checks, sub-Q injections, intradermal injections, IM injections, NG tubes, head-toe assessments, vital signs, all basic nursing care.

Essentially, if you've signed the waiver and are willing, you are fair game for anything that does not involve removal of clothing.

Just a bit of info....I am a senior in LPN school and we do practice some things on each other, but it is our decision as to whether we want to be practiced on. Another way I have to look at it is "do you want me sticking you if I haven't practiced first?" There is insurance obtained by the students and schools, and this is one of the most carefully monitored practices we do. Glad to see someone is curious.

Welp, now I know I've got to lose that 15 pounds if that 25-year-old (male) hottie in my nursing class is going to be giving me a bed bath with me in my underware. :w00t:

At my school we were allowed to practice IV starts, blood draws, and SC injections ( with saline/sterile water) on eachother. We were only allowed to do it on those who didn't mind, and only after having done it successfully on the practice manequins. I really appreciated the opportunity, I was much more comfortable the first time I did those procedures on patients because I had practiced on my classmates.

Im ok with another student practicing injections on me. There is no way in you know what that I am letting anyone practice giving a bath on me. NOT THE WAY I LOOK. Yikes

We practiced bed baths....clothed, I seem to recall ("Use your bath mitt to make smooth, velvety strokes".....)

We did head-to-toe assessments in our underwear, and yes, this included breast exams, which I'm sure was a real thrill for the guys in our class!

We did sub-Q injections, tuberculin tests and IVs on each other. I mssed IV week because I had the flu. Darn.

No foleys, NGs or enemas. Got plently of "cleansing enemas" in clinical, where we were largely thought of as little capped enema machines. (I once ran 2 liters of fluid into some nice old lady....on the 13th enema.....'cuz she still had poop....God only knows what her electrolytes looked like.....)

I hated the assessments......
