What is the oldest and youngest new mother you have seen? How old do you feel is too old to have children? Just curious after reading about the woman who just delivered at 60 years of age.
I will never forget a documentary I saw once at a hospital in Texas, in OB. A little Mexican woman in her late 20's was about to deliver her 12th child by section and she was considered high risk because of polygravidism. "Tired uterus" was the term the docs used, they were afraid she might bleed out because the uterus wouldn't be able to clamp down.
The oldest we have had was 51, and ironically we had 2 patients that same week that were 35 getting their hysterectomies. the youngest is 11, and it is crazy to see how proud these babies partents are when they have babies. I had one little girl she was 22, but she was having her 5th baby, it was her 8th pregnancy, and all her mother could talk about was how proud she was because she too, gave birth to number 5 at 22, years of age.
...and in 22 more years, the one that is so proud that her daughter had her 5th baby by age 22 will be great-grandma to five more! This kind of thinking (or NOT) will be endless, and I can only imagine who will be ultimately footing the bill!
How sad for some of these young girls. I'm not a nurse yet, but I used to teach school, and my first year teaching, I had a student who got pregnant by her mom's boyfriend. She was in the 7th grade. The boyfriend was arrested, but he got out on bail the same day thanks to the girl's mom. Social services told the mom that if she let the guy near her kids again (she had 4) that they would take her kids from her. She told them to go ahead and come get them because the wasn't going to give up her boyfriend just because her daughter was a whore. My student miscarried. She was such a sweet girl too. Too sweet for a mother like that. Fortunately, she was able to get out of the situation and go live with her grandparents who loved her and were "normal."
