What is the oldest and youngest new mother you have seen? How old do you feel is too old to have children? Just curious after reading about the woman who just delivered at 60 years of age.
Wow, hats off to the L&D nurses, I don't know how you do it seeing these babies having babies. How do you not lose your temper with the "mom's" parent/s in these situations
1st of all, because I harbor no ill will towards these "babies" (and at what age does a person stop being a baby in your eyes? 13? 15? 17? 20?). A girl/woman of any age deserves excellent nursing care while she delivers her child, and it's not up to me or you to let her know that we don't approve of her situation.
And is there a reason that "mom" is in quotes? I find that quite condescending--are you implying that because they are not over a certain age that they do not qualify as moms? They don't deserve that title?
2nd Because losing one's temper would serve no purpose in this situation, nor would it benefit anyone, mother, baby or nurse. I have patients who irk me or anger me for whatever reason (age never having been a factor) and I find that compassion, education, and advocacy get you as far as you can possibly go with those patients. Anger, hostility and temper losing shut people out, turn them off to anything you might have to offer and fuel conflict. What's the point of that?
3rd of all, why be mad at the parents? Sure, many of them have crappy parents, but many of them come from good homes with good parents. Teenagers fall in love, have sex, and get pregnant. It happens, and you don't have to "blame" someone all the time.
The oldest was 58,the child had downs syndrome, and she had four others under the age of 6 with downs, and at least 11 other children.
The youngest was 12 turning 13 soon, and although young, and uneducated, she did exactly as I told her in labor, and made it though with minimal distress. It was like she was so young, she expected somebody to just tell her what to do, like a parent. She was married, and stayed that way for at least 15 years which is the last I knew of her, DON't remember her having any more.

Quite an interesting read. He grew up healthy, but died in 1979 of a bone marrow disease. I assume she is still alive.
