Hi everyone.I was a nursing student twice , had a 4.0,dropped out to take care of seriously ill children and would like to go back.Problem is that I am now a 55 year old grandmother of eight. I don't want to be unrealistic, but I still want to be a nurse so badly!!

Specializes in Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Call Center RN.

I just started the 2nd semester of our nursing program. We have several older students in our class. Actually the teenagers and early twenties are very few. I say go for it. When I was going to school for my LPN we had two over 60 year olds. One was a retired school teacher, and the other once an inspiration. She had been taking care of her husband who was very ill with Parkinson's. He died towards the end of our classes. She missed 2 days of class and ended up graduating in the top 10 in our class.

 As someone great once said : " Measure your life not by the length of it, but by the width".

I'm 33 and working toward my ADN..

and my mom is 53 (54 next month, actually) and working toward her CPA. We'll graduate the same spring, and hopefully soon after will have some cool letters after our names!

My mother is the most awesome student I know, btw. She's got something like a 3.98 GPA..has had one B in her entire college career and the rest As. What a standard to try to live up to! Okay, welllll, so I probably won't ever come close, but I sure am proud of her.

GO FOR IT! You are never too old to put your dreams on a shelf.

You are never too old if you are motivated. Don't hesitate to pursue your dream.

Specializes in Home care, assisted living.
One of the schools I applied to had a student that was 68 yrs old. (BSN program.)

What a coincidence...one of my residents is the same age and told me he wants to be a nurse. He's a priest looking to do some mission work, and has plenty of life left in him. I told him to go for it.

I'm 53 and attending an ADN program. I love the younger students and the experience of doing what I've always wanted to do. Go for it! :)

I am 32 and just got my CPA. (know I passed the last two late December). I am also taking nursing pre-req at the same time.

Plan to quit the current job and going to nursing school full-time this Fall.

GO For It!! It's never too late to start back, ever. I am 39 and going. I am one of the oldest in the pre nursing classes, but I just love school. I don't let that bother me, that most are younger than me. If you have a dream, then follow it, your grandchildren would look up to you for doing so. Good luck.

Specializes in Cardiac.

Hi - I'm 38 and the oldest in my class - granted, I wish I had started school years ago, but the timing/motivation wasn't there, so I have decided just not to worry about what might have and get with my life!

Definitely - GO FOR IT (and never look back)!

Specializes in Operating Room.

If so much time has passed, and your desire to be a nurse is still strong, then go for it!!! Who cares how old you are? People of all ages make wonderful nurses, so don't let your dream slip away. :)

As for myself, I am 31 years old. On the first day of my English class, I was outside the door sitting in a chair, and waiting for the instructor to arrive to unlock the door. A young student walked up and asked me if I was the teacher. :rotfl: I had to go outside to call my husband to tell him about it. I thought it was so funny. Other than that, I have found a mixed age group in my classes, and we all get along well.

Good luck to you!! :)

Hey, I'm 44 and finished LPN school last spring. Starting my last 2 years for my RN/BSN on Wednesday. Call me crazy--I'm still one of the best students in my class and I work 40 hours a week.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!

Third time is the charm they say! I can only say good things about your decision. I, also , am an older student @ 47. I will still be in school in my early fifties because I plan to do the ANP thing. Personally, I enjoy the younger students. I was a former high school teacher and I am actually going to classes with some of my students. Took them a while to relax, but they're fine with it now and we do study sessions, complaining sessions and everything together now. SOme of them have problems (of course) and I find they come to me for advice. So I'm the den mother of sorts. It's been really fun so far and it will be fun for you.

Good Luck
