Hi everyone.I was a nursing student twice , had a 4.0,dropped out to take care of seriously ill children and would like to go back.Problem is that I am now a 55 year old grandmother of eight. I don't want to be unrealistic, but I still want to be a nurse so badly!!

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

Go for it! You'll be fantastic! Good luck!!!

in my class, there were at least 3 students who were in their fifties... it's never too late if it's your passion... hell, my mother joined the army and went through boot camp in her fifties!

There is a gentleman in my nursing class who is in his 60s. He said he always wanted to be a nurse and now that he is retired from the military, he has decided to go for it. It is never too late to do something for yourself! ;)

I just turned 56 this past Dec. and on the 19 of Jan. I will be starting my second semester of ADN school. Due to the extrteme variety of areas you can work, age really has no bearing on this profession. And the funny thing about it is that until I started the ADN program, I only had 2 daughters. And now somehow I have another 15. You will be amazed at how your excepted into a class with younger people. If you have 8 grandchildren, all of that expereince you have gained with them will become something for the younger mothers to draw on. You will love it.

Go for it! Nothing should stop you from becoming a nurse. You'll do great! Lots of people go back at your age. You'll probably end up doing better than most of your class! :)

One of the schools I applied to had a student that was 68 yrs old. (BSN program.)

Go for it!!

I am almost 46 and the oldest in my class (which surprised me, I thought there would be more folks older than me :) ) and, aside from suddenly having children (as in others think a classmate is my daughter- depending on my mood I either just tell them I'm not their mother or... well I have too much fun) it has never been an issue. Kind of wonderful to be in school again. And I can appreciate the youthful perspective others bring in comparison to my own "wisdom" and my jadedness. nice combo.. :balloons:

I was a nursing student once too back in my 30's but had to drop out due to "life" stuff. I am now going back to school to get my RN (still waiting for acceptance letter). I will start in Sept 05 and graduate when I am 50!!.

Like the other posters say.....You are NEVER too old!!. Good luck and keep us posted.:)

Thank you, thank you, everyone for all your replies to my post! I am so inspired now ! I saw a quote just today that says, I think, "It is never too late to be what you might have been". Kind of fits me I believe !

I am 27 and will graduate from ADN school in 2007. I'll be 30 (gasp!) and I thought I would be the oldest in my class. I guess I'm going to expect a few of my classmates to be older than me.
