I am finishing up pre-reqs and applying to an RN program for the fall - I wonder how many of you are out there that are non traditional nursing students - I have a feeling I may be the oldest nursing student on this site.:)
I'm 32. I'll be 33 when I graduate. Sometimes I get annoyed that I waited this long to go to school but I suppose it all worked out for the best. I was able to work from home and be home with my kids when they were small. I homeschooled them and was able to be there for all those milestones when they were little.
I'm 37 here, just finished pre-reqs and will start this fall. I will be close to 40 when I graduate and start working.
Same here. (except I think I'm 38, but I will have to count the years since 1972 :) ) I finish my last pre-req next semester and start this fall. I have been waiting a long time and am very excited. Congrats to you as well.
Look at yourself a simply someone who wants to help others and look at alllll the experience of helping you have!!
Never, never think your age as anything but a POSITIVE!! Of course there are plenty of good and smart young
nurses, but with what EXPERIENCE with people? But then again, they wouldn't be in nursing and STAY in nursing
if they don't want to help sick people.
You have a goal with each exam in nursing school. You have a goal
with each class you take.......
Well, I guess I am by far not the oldest. I am 31 and have 5 young boys at home. I figure if I don't start now, then I can't get done. My nursing app is due on Friday and here's for hoping that I rock my last semester of pre-reqs! Good luck to everyone and Happy New Year.
Good for you! I'm 38, newly divorced (happily LOL), starting second semester of nursing, and have 3-year-old and a 10-year-old boys; although, I have no idea what it's like to have 5 boys, it doesn't matter; if you set your mind to do something, you can do it. I can do so much more than I thought I could; when something comes up that has to be done (at least a few times a day), I manage to get it done because I love nursing (and school) more than I thought I could ever love anything. You'll know it when you start clinicals, or at least that's when I realized how utterly and absolutely awesome this career is, and you'll be surprised at what you can do when you really love what you're doing every day. Good luck to you too. Almost forgot . . . I also have a job, don't work much since nursing started, but still have that responsibility too; it can be done! Have fun; nursing school is very, very cool.
I'm 58 and starting a CDP program at the end of the month. My mom is 83 and she still works! I'm excited about the career switch. Being older has advantages.
I got my CNA before I applied to the nursing school so that I could demonstrate that I have the physical ability to be a nurse. Good move, because it turns out I like being a CNA and the experience with direct patient care has given me a lot of confidence.
You are never to old to pursue your dream.
During the process of doing my pre-reqs etc. I learned a lot about myself. Here's the most important thing I've found out:
It is much more exhilirating to realize that you're wrong, and learn you can change than it is to feel "vindicated" because you were right.
Clumsily said, sorry.
Simply... so encouraging to find this thread. I am 45, a mother of five children aged from 3 to 11, and still taking pre-requisits. i can take only one class per each semester, but this spring, I am going to try and take two classes.
I just did my schedule about how long it may take for me to finish a nursing program, (if I can get in). I will probably be 51 when I am done. Honestly.... I was totally depressed by this fact last weekend, but, after reading this thread, now I feel like I can pursue this pass. I will come back to this thread again when I feel discouraged.

So far, so good. I'm 41 now and I've been through one year of the BSN program and am loving it. Am I making all A's like I did before, NO, but am I enjoying what I'm doing and what I'm learning, YES. I have a 6 yo at home, and we don't have my income anymore, that's difficult. But when I think about what I'll be doing in another year from now, it all seems worth it.
Good luck to you.
