29 too old to start nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey just wondering if there are any others out there who are getting a 'late' start! lol A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to go back to school for Nursing as honestly the medical field has always interested me. And I really do enjoy helping others, trite as that sounds. Then I found out I had a beatiful darling little boy on the way! (hiatus anyone?) and knew then that if I wanted to pursue it, I would have to wait. I told myself that if I was still interested and if God still willing, I would try again in a year.

Now he is 18 months, and I am really ready for this. I work full time (I work for the state of Ga, and its pretty dead end) I am married and with my son I know this is going to be really hard.

My question is really, is it 'frowned' upon so to say that I am starting journey so late? I know 29 is not old, but it seems that way in the world of careers. I guess I just need reassurance that I have not waited to late to start over!

I am a 34 year old male and i am just sarting my pre-reqs Tuesday.I am only starting with two classes to help me get used to being in school and learning how to study. My classes are Public & Private Communication

I don't think you're ever too old to learn something new! My friend and doula mentor Jan is in her 40's and a nursing student. My suggestion? Go to a community college---much friendly and down to earth to all their students!

Nope, not at all. I am going to be 29 in August and I'm applying to the LVN program in December. i have 3 kids ages 6, 4 and 8 months. It will be hard you can guarantee that but don't ever give up. Good luck!

Considering that there are people that attend nursing school who are in their 50s and 60s, no, 29 is not too old too start.

Of course you aren't too old! I'm 32 and I think that if you have the desire and ambition, it is just fine. I wouldn't sweat it...never to old to learn something! :)

Thank you so much everybody for all the support!:) I'm only taking 2 pre-reqs this sem, to see how the load goes w/ a full time job and a little one...I totally agree with the entries regarding having more responsibity at this time in my life. Not sure I could've swong this at 20! LOL Too busy worrying about things that didn't need to be worried about. One day at a time, as they say!

oops. I think that was supposed to be 'swung' not 'swong'. Wonder what 'swong' means. We could have a new nursing slang here...

Doodle's Mom - I am right there with you! I am 29 with a 3-yr-old and starting my prereqs next week. We can do this!

THANKS FOR THIS.. I AM BOTH NEW TO THIS FORUM AND ALSO SCHOOL I HAVE JUST DECIDED TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL FOR NURSING. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TWICE BEFORE, BUT DROPPED OUT DUE TO PREGNANCY. MY CHILDREN ARE SCHOOL AGED NOW, SO IT'S TIME TO FOCUS ON MOMMY. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE (years or quarters)? Thanks..

A lady I knew started the program at age 45.

Specializes in LTC, Correctional Nursing.

Heck NO!!!! Get out there and do it girl! I am 34, and trust me... there are women that are way older than me in it. I know that one lady was in her early 50's! You are never too old! I know what you mean about working for the state in a dead end job. I can't go any higher either. I work for the Dept. of Health in Florida, so I can't really do anything else unless I finish my RN. I love community nursing. Good luck and I pray that God just guides your steps. :-)

29 is young as hell, I know 40 yr olds who just started med school and we all know how long that takes to complete.

Hey! I am turnings 32 in July and I started going to school when I was 30. As my son grows older (he's 21mths old now), I am slowly but surely taking more classes. This fall, I'm intending on taking Chem, A&P I as well as my CNA class. I believe if you have a strong desire/drive, you will do it. Age is just a number.:)
