old/new grad - need to pass exam!

Published

Hi everyone. I just stumbled upon this site today. It seems like it will be very useful and a relief in the future. I graduated nursing school last May (2005) and still have not passed the NCLEX! I have taken it twice already and am about to take it again at the end of the month . . . it has been a long road for me. The first time I took it, it shut off at 265, and the second time 75 (guess I did worse the 2nd time around). So I have experienced both extremes. I have been doing many review ?s, and hope to be well prepared for my next exam. Even though I have taken it twice already I still get very anxious just thinking about it. I almost think the anxiety is what is messing me up when I do take it. I just want to get through this and get on with my life . . . I can't wait to be a nurse! So I am never going to give up, I am just going to keep taking it 'til I do pass. I didn't go to nursing school for 4 years to give up. I am praying that I pass it this time!

All this talk about the boards got me wondering. Do students who graduate with an Associates take the same exam as the students who graduate with a Bachelor's? Does it have Chem and Math on the exam, because my Associates program has none of that.
The nursing boards are for nurses. Period.

As a new grad with a BSN or an ASN, you are a new grad. Everybody is just at the starting line.

The difference generally comes a little later with opportunities for advancement. Another difference is that you have to have a BSN to work for the federal government, i.e., to work at a VA Hospital.

The boards are for all nurses--LVN/LPN boards are different from the RN boards, but that's it.

Hope this helps.

I graduated in May 05 too,,and I am so happy that I am not alone!! I just took the exam today,,265 questions, for the second time. The first time I took 165 and didnt pass. I do get anxious before the test,,but this time I got anxious at the end of the test b/c I was running out of time. but thankfully I finished but not my downfall towards the end was not in a timely manner, I was rushing. I noticed on the test today that some questions I got earlier in the test was repeating itself..it was strange,,did u get questions like that too,,in my mind I wanted to go back and change but couldnt of coorifice!.But anyway,,its hard not having a license yet. Money,,money money is talking!! But,,the reason is my paperwork did not get finalized and it kept pushing me furthere..beofre I knew it ,,fall was already here,,but atleast we are all determined to be nurses and help others. We havent gone this far to stop! God is with all of us and he knows we are good hearted people.

Chris, I am speaking specifically about the boards. If someone who graduates with a limited educational background such as an ADN graduate whom has no chemistry background and limited or no math background, compared to someone who graduates with a BSN who has to have Chem and math how do they take the same boards, is there chem and math on the NCLEX?

Ash, The only math I can think of is drug calculations.

Everyone takes the NCLEXRN exam regardless of degree. The exam does not ask specific questions about chemistry or math. You may have to use math skills for med calculations, etc., but it is not a chemistry or math test.

I passed my NCLEX. I am soooo happy

It is a nursing exam. period. There is no chemistry on it. Each nursing program actually has math in it, just depends on what they are calling it, if it is a separate course, or included directly in your Nursing Fundamentals course. Same thing with Chemistry. The biggest difference between the two programs are Community Health, as well as electives. The nursing requirements to get a license in any state are the same, whether you get a Diploma, an ADN, or a BSN.

The BSN focuses more on management and administrative issues in some of their later coursework, but actual nursing core classes are the same.

I just found out today that I finally passed! Now I can actually have a life! Thanks for the support everyone!
