Hi everyone. I'm from Ohio, my parents and sisters just moved to shawnee. But plan on moving to Tulsa area soon. Sister and mom trying their hardest to get me to move there. Have family in Enid and Oklahoma City that I have never met, so I'm alittle interested. Curious to see what patient ratios, pay, further education, and hospitals are like in Shawnee and Tulsa areas???? And I'm an LPN with IV certification here. Wondering if your LPN's can be IV certified and what kind of stipulations are with it. Thanks in advance for any information.
Hi Everyone!
I'm 26 years old & have been a nurse for 3 years. I live in Tulsa & do L&D (I worked PACU @ a specialty hospital part-time for extra money). I'm currently traveling with my husband & son @ my side.
Marcee I can really tell u about the Tulsa area hospitals if you really want to know! The speciality hospitals are up & coming and pay the best, $16-$18 base. Tulsa Spine Hospital is Great....Orthopedic Hospital is great and they pay well with great benefits. They just opened a Heart Hospital (run by St Francis) in Broken Arrow. Don't know much about that place yet. The hospitals over all are okay. St Francis is a true corporate hospital. They don't really appreciate their employees, don't give raises, top out @ $25/hr, $500 sign on bonus but $1500 referral bonus. They are know as the best hospital in Tulsa.
St. John is 2nd best. They do give appropriate raises and have better shift diffs. One thing I personally dont like is the lighting in the hospital is really bad. It makes the place seem depressing. They have improved the lighting in the main foyer though. It's a good place to work. I did an externship in surgery there.
Southcrest & Hillcrest used to be owned by the same people but not any more. Southcrest is a fairly new hospital with a pretty bad rep. I wouldnt send my animal there. I think it was last summer they had 2 kids die after minor surgery, one had his toenail removed & went home and died. I have a friend that did agency there in CCU, not good. They do pay well though. I think they start @ $16-$18. They have good benefits & good incentive for OT.
Hillcrest (teaching)...rep is getting better. They have an awesome new L&D. Their main complaints are from the ER and basic pt care. They are the ones who microwaved blood some years ago & gave it to a pt.... Nickname....Killcrest. They have recently upped there base to $18 and had been offering a $6000 sign on for a 2 year commit. They are under new ownership so I don't know how things are going over there.
Tulsa Regional (teaching) DONT GO THERE NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY OFFER!
Anything else u want to know? lol
Oh yeah, most PRN positions pay $24-$25/hr
I am a surgery nurse currently working in the Shawnee area.I used to work L&D in OKC. I have worked in a lot of areas with the exception of ICU and ER.
I too have noticed that a lot of nurses don't respond to this site from Oklahoma. That is sad, because it is a very good resource for information. If you want to just chat, respond by e-mail. I would be happy to start up a conversation.
Oh, I forgot to let you know, I have been an RN for 9 years. I have also worked in other states.
Hope other nurses respond.
I'd love to talk with nurses in Oklahoma...I'm a future GN...May 2006.....please...tell me what you know
I'm new to the boards but have red posts many times.
I was just reading what k cole wrote about Southcrest in tulsa, and I completely agree. I've been dear friends with three CNA's who have worked at Southcrest and the stories they tell are unbelivable. It seems that fourty minute smoke breaks are the norm. If census is less than 7 pt's per CNA, the CNA is pulled. That means nurses may provide total care including trays and bedbaths, etc. for the additional pts. (up to 10.) If census is high a second CNA won't be called to the floor until the census is 20. 20 pt's per one CNA! Pt's have died and stroked out due to negligence. The hospital runs CNA's especially ragged, which makes it tough on nurses since experienced CNA's quit or go somewhere else where they are appreciated. Then, the only CNA's accepting positions are inexperienced and the nurses have no time to teach them and the level of pt care never improves. Word is starting to spread and they're having a difficult time getting agency staff to come in. Southcrest is now advertising to a national audience for pts for their bariatric floor (stomach stapling is big business) because Tulsans are choosing the other hospitals in town. Southcrest is a corporate hospital where the pt suffers for the bottom line.
