Oklahoma introductions....

Some of us in this forum have been here for a while, but there have been several new "faces" lately. :welcome:

So maybe we can do introductions.

Tell us :

your first name (if you want)

where you live

where you work, and what your position is, how long you've been there, etc

if you are in school, the name and type of program

plans for future education

and anything else that's fun to know about you.

Here's me:

My name is Lana (I always tell people that Lana sounds like Banana, and that's how I ended up with my nickname)

I live in Tulsa and have been here for 6 years, 4 years in OKC before that.

I have been at St. John's as a CNA for 1 month and it's sooo educational! I've very glad to have that experience.

I'm in the LPN program at Tulsa Technology Center and it looks like I will be able to finish in late February or early March, I want to take the boards sometime in March though.

After finishing that I am planning to go straight into TCC's LPN-RN program or possibly working a year and then doing OU's LPN-BSN or Langston's LPN-BSN if they have it up and running.

I'm single and looking (although not looking very hard because I don't have time for dating right now!), am 28 years old, and am quickly becoming the "crazy cat lady" because my cat is my baby. She's pictured in my avatar. If you guys have seen that commercial on TLC about "dating is hard, but so is becoming the crazy cat lady," that suits me to a T! I'm going to buy myself the figureine that they sell for it!

My dad lives in Indiana - he and my stepmom moved there from the Fort Worth area about a year ago & they really like it there - I think mainly because of the weather!! :rolleyes:

Have fun in anatomy - that ended up being one of my favorite pre-reqs!! I don't know why but most of my classmates thought it was boring although I just loved it - aside from the smell of the cadavers that seemed to permeate my nostrils and stick on my clothes for hours after... that was not so pleasant...

Hi everyone,

My name is Mindie and I just moved to Southwest OK over the summer. I am finishing up my last pre req (AP II) this semester and then I plan on applying to the local LPN program as well as the local ADN program. Ultimately I would like to get my BSN.

I live in SW OK with my hubby and two beautiful girls who are 2 and 4.

Hmm... Last winter was a mild one. (I loved it -- I'm not a big fan of cold gray weather). Usually I absolutely hate Indiana winters and get really homesick for OK. Autumn is gorgeous. I loved autumn in Oklahoma, but it's especially nice here.

Have fun in anatomy - that ended up being one of my favorite pre-reqs!! I don't know why but most of my classmates thought it was boring although I just loved it - aside from the smell of the cadavers that seemed to permeate my nostrils and stick on my clothes for hours after... that was not so pleasant...

We're dissecting cats. I'd never dissected anything in my life aside from watching my 6th grade teacher cut up a fish and show us parts (we passed around the eyeball). After the first night with the cats 2 weeks ago, I have to admit I wanted nothing more than a shower when I got home, just to get rid of the smell of the preservative and the burning and stinging in my eyes and nostrils. I think I'm doing great for someone who's too squeamish to bait a fish hook or take a fish off the hook! :pumpiron:

I'm Katherine, I'm in my late 30's and live in Broken Arrow with my husband, Steve. We've been married since Jan 05, and I still think we are in the newlywed phase of everything.

I've had varied medical career. I have my speech-language pathology degree from TU, but I really didn't want to do that and now I'm pursuing nursing. I'm a CNA, and I'll be looking for a job so that I'll have my ADN covered. I'm looking into whatever school has the shortest wait list. :) I'm also a labor doula (for more info on what a doula is, see http://www.dona.com) and couples will hire me out, and I work on a contract basis. When I get the chance, I volunteer my doula services at Hillcrest at the new women's center. I'm also a volunteer working in the NICU as a "Cuddler" and I've been enjoying that. I really wanted to get an idea of what it was like to work in the NICU, and I think it's really been an invaluable experience.

Hopefully soon I will have enough $$$ to complete my prereqs, and then I'll apply to nursing schools. Don't know how soon that will be, but I think it'll be within the next year.

For now, I'm really enjoying the doula work as well as the Cuddler program at Hillcrest.

I think it's mainly the disgusting summers in Texas that they don't miss! My stepmom grew up in Evansville & lived in Chicago for a long time so I guess she is used to those winters up there! Our winter was a little too mild for me here last year - I like to get cold enough for long enough to kill all the things that bite me or make me sneeze!

I got accustomed to the preservative smell after a while - at least as accustomed as I could get without being a funeral science major. I'm not big on baiting a hook either - but then again, cadavers aren't alive and plus, I can do stuff to humans that would bother me to do on animals b/c I can't explain to an animal what I'm doing...

A good friend of mine had twins at 27 weeks gestation at SFH - both around 1.5lbs - and so her friends and family spent a great deal of time around the NICU for the next 3 months and eventually both her mother and mother-in-law began volunteering as cuddlers and loved it so much.

Yeah, my friend's twins were so sick and could not be held for many weeks - it was sooooo hard for all of the family - I think it was a big reason her mom & MIL got involved in the program - they just had a bunch of cuddling they needed to give!

The NICU is very definitely a different world - the nurses and NNPs were so fantastic - it was one of the experiences that solidified my desire to go to nursing school.

Hi Everyone!

I'm Shellie. I'm a "pre-nursing" student, finishing my prereq's and hope to be accepted into the Fall 07 class at TTC and then bridge at TCC. I live in Tulsa with my husband and our son, age 11. I've always been interested in nursing but was afraid I wasn't smart enough. I earned by AD in legal studies because it seemed "easier" to me twenty years ago. I worked in the legal field for a few years until becoming a SAHM. As I have become older and wiser, I realize I can do anything I set my mind to and so, with my family's blessing, am begining my nursing journey.

I look forward to getting to know all of you better.

My name is Dotti and I live in Owasso. I am currently seeking employment as a CNA. I am in the TTC/TCC 1+1 LPN program. Nursing is a second career for me as I had a long career in computer software development, most recently at Verizon. I plan to go on to TCC's ADN program and eventually hope to become an NP.
