Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Thanks Michele. After enrolling in Nrse 300, will OU send me the bill online or mail? How do I make payment? I was not given that option when I registered, which was different from what other schools I've attended did.

Can someone tell me how this works?

Go to My OHIO - then to the academics tab on the dashboard where there is a link to student services. That will take you to your class schedule, etc. From there you can make a payment, view charges, see any financial aid disbursements, etc. If you are having difficulty with it - pick up the phone and call the bursars office.

Some follow-up questions after completing my first semester at OU.

How soon after the end of classes are grades available? I assume that you access them through MyOhio and then the Student Center but as of this morning, there's nothing there relating to grades.

On an unrelated issue, there seemed to be very few courses offered for the 5 Sep session and I wound up registering for Cultural Diversity. Can anyone who's taken this class provide some advance insight?

I actually tried to sign up for Health Appraisal at the same time (it had a 17 Oct start date, and so would have been my next class after Diversity) but the system wouldn't let me, saying I did not have the pre-reqs. Seemed strange - I thought that Transitions was the only pre-req but I guess there's time to look into that issue. I did see that this course has a "lab" associated with it though. What does a lab for an on line course consist of?

For Nov2010: It takes a while (maybe a week) for OU to post your bill and they give you another week or so to pay. Just follow rninme's directions and check every couple of days or so. You can also pay via on line bank transfer if you don't want to mail a check or use a credit card.

please, has anyone taken Statistics course from OU? How was the course and which one did you take? Which instructor would you recommend for me?

Thanks

Yes....My instructor was Lassiter. He was great. Very fair. Had to do weekly homework assignments (some due 2x/week). Had to take 2 proctored exams. So you have to find a location that provides proctored exams. I REALLY liked the fact that he gave the syllabus out before the class started (about 4 days). So I basically knocked out 5 modules in that time. The class is so fast paced that if you fall behind, you're screwed.

I had Lyons for Cultural Diversity. Erlewine for Transitions. I think Erlewine is teaching your Cultural Diversity class. A lot of the focus was basically what is your environment (community/work) doing to address cultural diversity. Since the instructors are different, not really sure what you'll have to do in terms of papers/quizzes.

Not sure why you couldn't registered for Appraisal. I opted out, but I don't remember my instructor Tennant having a "lab". We did have to get a workbook with the textbook.

Hello,

I am currently enrolled in the completion prog at OU, getting ready to start my 6th class! I am looking to possibly CLEP out of 2 remaining gen ed classes I need...a Fine Arts and 300-level Composition. Anybody know if the Humanities CLEP would cover the Fine Arts? What about 300 Comp...any ideas besides a traditional 12-week writing class??

Thanks,

K

Has anyone doubled the RN-BSN core courses? Is it advisable for someone working Part-time 2-12shifts/week? I really want to get done with everything by summer next year:idea:

Thanks

There is a graphic on the OU Knowledge Base page that has a course map for those who want to double up. You can find that here:

http://www.outreach.ohio.edu/bsn/documents/AOI_Carousel.pdf

If you're working 24 hours a week, you should be able to handle 2 courses. I doubled up when I was doing my MBA and it was challenging but still doable even though I was working 50 plus hours each week.

There's also a table that lays out the courses that OU plans to offer and groups them sequentially for either a single or double course progression but I can't remember where that is. You may want to search around on the OU RN-BSN website for it.

Thanks deltaroxxy2. You're correct about the instructor for Diversity. I just ordered the text for the course - was able to find a new 4th edition offered on line for a song - the bookstore wants $55 for the assigned 5th edition but my bet is that there isn't a great deal of difference between the two.
