Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

please can someone tell me how is Nrse 300 class. I just enrolled today for sept. start date. What should I expect (test, quizzies, research paper, group discussion, etc)? My instructor is T. Hood-Brown. How is he? I'm not able to log in blackboard or Epic.

I just completed the same section of this class - the instructor is ♀

Not sure if this is case for the all courses in the OU program but in this one, the student interaction was exclusively with the TA. The class itself is not difficult but it is time consuming with a lot of what I would call "busy work". There are a number of presentations and videos as well as a some print readings for which you will need to access the OU on-line library, only one from the assigned text. As far as grading, there are a couple of quizzes, several very short (2 pages or less) papers and several iterations of required discussion board postings & responses. If you look at the grading rubric and make sure your assignments match the requirements posted there, you can easily do well. Don't fall behind - 5 weeks goes by quickly.

Good luck!

Has anyone else had trouble registering for the Fall semester? I went on line this morning to register but was not able to do so. The error message that I receive states that: "You do not have access to enrollment at this time."

Not sure why this should be since I received an e-mail from OU a while back saying that enrollment was open to me. Does anyone know if the enrollment system is shut down over the weekend? Maybe this is Irene-related? I tried contacting the help desk but that is not staffed on the weekend. I did send an e-mail to the help desk but since there's apparently no staff on the weekend, don't hold out much hope for a reply, much less resolution, in the immediate future.

With the deadline at 0900 tomorrow, I hope can get this fixed in time. My fault for waiting but this is supposed to be an on line program that you can do according to your schedule, not OU's.

Chuckster- had to contact advisors office to have fall session activated to allow me to register. I initially got the same message you did. Good luck!!!

Nov2010- I had the same instructor as chuckster for NRSE300 he did an excellent job of summarizing the class. It really was not bad at all.

Thanks hollie, that's good to know. I'll try phoning on Mon morning but beating that 0900 deadline is gonna be tough. I guess not mentioning that you need to phone the office as part of the e-mail with the registration instructions is just another one of the problems related to the new computing system. . .

Yes - I had to call also to get Fall added, but I did it back in July :) Be on the phone EARLY lol

Thanks Chuckster and Hollie for your kind replies.

please, everyone, how do I confirm that my registration was successful. This is my first class with OU. When I registered for Nrse 300 on Saturday, my status changed to enrolled. I was expecting to pay for the class right away, but did not receive any option to do so online.

Thanks

I'm starting there too. You cannot log onto Epic until they give you the password...which is Friday!

Chuckster....do we need to take notes from these videos?? Do I need to get a copybook??? :lol2:. I assume the papers are in AP format. I have the link to Purdue already. Better start getting ready this week. They aren't giving out the Epic passwords until friday to give you "4 days to learn how to use it". Don't they know it's a holiday weekend and people might not be home????

Mine says the same thing. I just sent my payment in anyway and it was cashed. Not a lot of info here.....a little nerve-wracking!

I'm sure it varies from section to section but none of the videos played a role in the assignments (at least not a major role). I jotted down some notes while watching the first one but had no need for them after doing so. So I would sweat anything there.

Yes, your papers are in APA format. In fact, one of my criticisms of the course is that there is much more importance placed on form rather than on substance. Since I basically write for a living, it's frustrating to loose a point on a well-crafted paper because you didn't indent the second line of a reference properly. The Purdue link has most of what you need and if you aren't already aware, you can print it out in its entirety, which I found much easier to use than the on-line version. Though the OWL stuff is sufficient, it's just barely so and if there's going to be so much attention paid to form in this program, I may invest in an APA guide (used 6th ed on A----n for $12, 5th ed for 2 bucks).

Don't worry about using EPIC - it's not hard and 4 days is more than enough time.

Thanks Michele. After enrolling in Nrse 300, will OU send me the bill online or mail? How do I make payment? I was not given that option when I registered, which was different from what other schools I've attended did.

Can someone tell me how this works?
