Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I'll be taking 310 either next session or the first summer session. The mini-syllabus calls for the 5th edition but there is a newer 6th ed out there. Which did you use?

Update:

This is kind of a moot point now. Since I posted the question, I've actually ordered new copies of the 5th edition for both the text and manual - couldn't resist the price and will have to put up with using the older edition. With luck, I can prep for Appraisal while taking Community and test out of it during the Spring 2 session. This would mean I'd have 12 weeks of no courses (who-hoo!)since neither Family Nursing nor Research seem to be offered until Summer 2 or Fall.

chuckster - email me your address and I will ship my copies to you -

My grade is still showing up at NR under myohio. Yet I got an email today stating all grades were up.

So, If your employer does not participate with academic outreach then would you complete the Rn to Bsn online program? I am confused with the website. I applied to OU but I am not sure which program I am in. Does it even matter?

Hi I am interested in enrolling in the onlin BSN program but I have a few questions. I will graduate from my nursing school in September and I won't take my NCLEX until October so I plan on enrolling for Spring 2013. I want to take some prerequisites that I may need in during the fall at my local community college. Can anyone tell me besides statistics some prerequisites that OU looks for? Is child psychology a prequisite? I do have an associates degree in business.

Thanks

I had to take stats, nutrition, junior english (bus communication), and an ART class (I took music). I'm sure others will chime in on other classes they had to take.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Neuro, ICU, travel RN, Psych.

Graduation Requirements

So now I am getting confused....When I look and OU's website it looks like there are a bunch of tiers....tier 1 gen education requirements needs 12 credit hours, and what is quantative skills? tier 2 gen education requirements 32 credit hours needed....then there is support courses 58 credit hours, and lower division nursing courses 40 credit hours....do some of the courses you have taken before intermix with others?? I am starting to feel defeated like this is never ending :scrying: Thanks in advance if anyone can help...Just seems like a lot of credits...

40 credits is for your ADN or Diploma is 60 credits. Tier I - and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong - are the things like Freshman comp, algebra, etc. Tier 2 - that is a requirement for a 300 level english class (junior level). I fulfilled that requirement at OU with business communications. All my tier I stuff was fulfilled prior to OU by classes I took at the community college level and another state university. Not sure what tier Cross cultural perspectives falls under - but I fulfilled that with a cultural anthropology course. Tier 3 is fulfilled by your nursing capstone course - nursing excellence. There are actually no more credits required than there would be for any bachelors degree - seems overwhelming at first but just look at it class by class. There are some here that were required to take 20 classes to meet the OU graduation requirements ... I am sure one of them will chime in. Oh michelemybell ....

classes taken prior to OU count in that semester credit total .. and I have found the OU is quite generous with transfer credits. Good luck -

Thank-you so much rninme!! This make sense now!! I have read that they are quite generous with transfer credits so that is great! I really appreciate it! It sounds like they are pretty great with helping once you are enrolled too. I am relieved now!! On to a nice weekend :w00t:
