Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I have the same issue with NRSE 341, Community Health, commencing 3/26. I will have my computer but will basically be on vacation...anybody have feedback on this class and michellemybell's class NRSE 335??? Any recommendations regarding taking 2 nursing courses together and which are perhaps easier than others? I know a lot depends on the TA but the overall requirements are the same regardless. Thanks in advance.

Funny you mention vacation....I want to go to Vegas Jan 4-9 but am afraid to book it due to the start of Legal! Plus starting in the summer no week long breaks between classes :crying2:

simply complicated, I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the student center check list. I would call the nursing school directly. A year ago is was nearly impossible to talk to a real live person. Things have drastically improved in that arena. Almost without a doubt you'll be starting NRSE 300 before you have a completed DARs report. They do a good job of giving you credit wherever they can. I hope things go really fast for you!

Hmm good point. It doesn't say incomplete which it could if I was still waiting on transcripts though. They would have had to just put complete in right away. My school is pretty quick about sending transcripts, and it was only 1 school. I request them online and pay then, so it's pretty easy.

I'm not worried about starting before I get my final DARS. I just want to know I'm accepted, haha. After the last school and the problems with that just makes me anxious.

If you can access a computer for a little bit each day I'd think you'd be okay. I'm planning to do some major work on the airplane. We have to have fun on this journey. Classes start Jan 2nd, right? I'm nervous about being gone as well but I'm doing it anyhow. That's why we have laptops!

ah! how i never found this thread I don't know. maybe i was looking up pointless information or trying to follow shady directions for 325~ugh. I actually thought the grades were easy, but doing the work was nutso. I just finished it as well. 4 more classes, and I am done!! whew. Good to see others in the class, as im sure we all dont get real social on the replys for school discussion boards, but for grades.

Its a really easy online program, and so far its been a great program. A few shady directions for this or that paper, etc, but nothing different than most other in person programs. Good luck RNs! light is coming at the end of the tunnel

Hear from anyone that has taken 405?? I heard its hard. Oh boy.

Research isn't really hard, but a lot of busy work. I bugged the hell out the the research nurses that I work with so that helped. But I was annoyed that they kept stressing the need for stats before or w/this class. Not even necessary.

Community is another busy class. Start surveying your community. How is the ethic diversity. Health clinics. Homeless shelters. Etc. I was on vacation 2 weeks of this class, so let's just say I didn't enjoy my vacation much...LOL But I did learn A LOT about my community and I plan on doing some volunteer work at some of the organizations in my area.

You still have to live your life even when in school. The summer session is rough. I won't lie. Kids are off. Vacations booked. No break except for 2 days, but you can do it!!! :)

I know you and I had come to that conclusion. But they are offering a June summer start date. So they wouldn't be able to offer it if there was no class. Atleast that would make sense.

I want to start in March either way, so it doesn't matter. But I was just wondering if anyone doesn't get in for Spring. A girl I work with is actually applying today. She was going to go to a different school, but I talked her into OU:) It will be awesome if someone I see all the time is in "class" with me.

thats very nice to have someone to go through the program with

. . . I can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on books I likely won't look at again. . . . Where do you shop for books?

Textbooks are the last bastion of profitability for traditional publishers: With much less expensive e-books breathing down their necks, publishers need to try their best to squeeze every last dollar they can out of students. As far as looking for books, I usually start by searching that very large site whose name is the same as the largest river in South America, for the ISBN of the assigned text. Often, this site will also list the earlier editions, so you can get the ISBN for your target text and you can also check prices while you're there. The other sites I use are Abe and Alibris (Note: Searching with the ISBN gives you more accurate results than using the title). Some have said they've had luck with Half.com or cheaptextbooks but I personally have not found either of these to be competitive.

chuckster...have a real dilemma. . . I will PM if that's okay???
Sure - feel free to PM.

I took NRSE 341 Community Health this past Summer. I actually really enjoyed this class. Like deltaroxxy said it's a bit of a "busy" class but very doable. So far for me personally NRSE 341 has been one of my favorite classes. You will have weekly assignments, one quiz per week and one discussion board post with 2 peer responses. The weekly assignments for the most part aren't bad and you are given a pre-made template that you will fill in. I think one week as the assignment you had to write a paper instead of using a pre-made template. The directions for this course are clear and not confusing at all. The weekly quizzes aren't bad either. The content of the quizzes are based on that week's reading and my TA would give us a study guide for that week's quiz. The discussions weren't bad either. None of this mini essay crap just a couple paragraphs. Of course the content of this class could change between when I took it to when it is offered again.

This class really opens up your eyes to the health issues in the county where you live and how it compares on a state and national level. You also get to choose a HealthyPeople 2020 National Health Objective that pertains to your community and that health objective will be the basis to most of your assignments. Really good class and I really enjoyed it. I felt like I actually learned something in this class.

What was your health objective? Mine was global health w/a focus on TB. It's amazing how much you can really learn in these 5wk classes. I think hands down my favorite NRSE class has been cultural diversity. And my favorite elective has been business communication.

This is certainly encouraging after suffering through 325. One discussion board question a week seems adequate...but 3 was ridiculous and a bit redundant as I recall. I'm enjoying the break but it's too long for me. I want to keep the ball rolling. Now to figure out statistics!

My health objective was cancer. I take business communication this winter quarter along with Legal/Ethical Issues the first 5 weeks and then Nursing Research the second 5 weeks. I just hope business comp. isn't too time consuming of a class. I start a new job working nights in two weeks. I know I can handle the NRSE class but don't want to be bogged down with a ton of lengthy, mind numbing papers in Business Comp. because I HATE writing papers. My instructor is "Professor F" so guess I will have to wait and see how it goes! Glad to hear that business comp. was your favorite class, knowing that helps.

It seems a lot of folks take more than one class. Now that I'm gettting the hang of the whole system it's tempting. The hardest part was figuring out what was expected. It seems the nursing classes have a similar format and I don't feel so overwhelmed. Thanks for all the support, guys.

Anybody besides deltaroxxy taken stats at OU? If so would LOVE your feedback on the course. I'm terrified but need to take it. What nursing course would pair okay with it? I can't really take it solo. Thanks in advance. BTW I'm a major math wimp!
