Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Yes it is long! I really can't read through 136 pages, I guess I will just wait and see for myself when/if I'm accepted. Thanks :)

did you already apply and send transcript ? also what term are you applying for? I applied a few weeks ago for the spring session. I believe you will need to get in for March or else you would have to wait until August to begin.

Hmmm...makes me want to take two classes and move along more quickly. I just worry about the stress. I spend a LOT of time on one course alone. It takes me forever to write responses and back them with references. I'm thinking that culture fashion course might be one to take in conjunction with a nursing class.

I'm looking forward to that fashion course! I thought the same thing about health assessment....could've totally taken a second class...but hey I was relaxed!!! Enjoy the holidays everybody.

so michellemybell, you think you had plenty of time for 2 classes? 325 took a lot of time in my opinion. LOTS of discussion board posts. I started out with 325 and 310 and was so relieve to only have one class to take. Was 310 easier than you expected? These experienced students tell me 325 has been the worst. Are you considering fashion culture with another class?

It was definitely easaier than I expected. The first 2 weeks were busy.....we had a comprehensive heritage assessment on somebody you know and a 4 page paper. Similar to transitions. But then week 3-5 was readings, 3 quizzes, a discussion board (sometimes 1 paragraph) and case a case study each week. If you are an experienced nurse it may be easier. Not bad at all...managed an A....had a great TA. The worst thing so far is the miscommunication/misinformation within the class. Not 100% sure if I'm gonna take another with fashion...just thinking about it but I'm afraid to take that leap. It was nice having some free time this past few weeks lol. So what was you class all about? Sound like you guys were frustrated. I am doing Legal/Ethical in January BTW.

Actually I kinda like the discussion boards. Just grab an article or 2 and write a few paragraphs! I've managed to get my post and 2 replies done in 3 or 4 hours or so. I scribble stuff down when I can too. I sure hope they take our surveys seriously. I plan to call the advisor soon and go over my transcripts again. I know not much will change but the thought of 21 more classes sucks! lolol.

Definitely get in touch with your advisor. There were some errors in my DARs and it's all been corrected. I'm taking ethics next also, followed by gerontology. 325 had problems. Directions were often so wordy you couldn't figure out what was required...almost like you couldn't see the forest for the trees. The last module I couldn't even get the videos to play which was no big deal in terms of the course, BUT....We busted our humps on a genetics module that they ended up giving everyone 100% if they turned it in on time. I'm happy with the 100% but...you catch my drift here. Luckily my TA was top notch. It's a good thing you like the DB posts. The last module had 3 of them with 2 replies to each one =9 total, all requiring in text citations and references. Just busy work I guess. Anyhow, so glad it's over and I got an A. I was reconsidering doubling up courses so I could finish sooner but the course layout makes it so that isn't even an option anymore. Depending on the fashion culture feedback I may take that with a nursing course. I'd like to apply to the FNP program for 2013 (spring) so want to move on through this. I'm glad you're continuing on!

I feel for you michelemybell - that's quite a few classes. I'm sure you can do it and it will definitely be worth the pain. And speaking of pain, maybe this will help - it worked to get me through 325 which, as you've seen expressed here by many, also kinda s*cks.

Well, it is a lot of courses but if you come out with the BSN and that's your goal then you've achieved something many people won't even attempt. It seems we just started and you've got 2 under your belt. Onward!

Thanks Chuckster....I'll need to refer to that video over the next 2-3 years lol. My friend had a good point....maybe way back when I got my degree the associate degree requirement was less than it is today....thus my lack of credits. Anyway it would take me just as long to go to Immaculata classroom or drexel online. So I'm willing to keep trying and tolerate the "issues"(until I cave in) for the cheaper tuition, NO CLINICAL, and flexibility.

No caving in allowed. When you feel like that PM me! Or come to this site for encouragement. This is a great program for folks like us. My nieces graduate from OU brick and mortar and it has a very good reputation. Online is the way for me!

Ok Questions for the veterans. What resources do you guys use for your papers?.Do you subscribe to nursing journals and if so which ones.Just would like to get my ducks in a row and start preparing.

I surf the internet. Check out sites like the CDC, NIH, ANA...google is my friend. :D There is the online library at OU also but I haven't had great success using it.
