Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.
I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.
As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.
As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.
I was just looking through the syllabus for 325 and unless I'm reading things incorrectly (always a possibility for me), once we're done with this module - which has 2 fairly detailed assignments (Mandelian and non-traditional inheritance) and a test but no DB - there is not much left. For week 5, the syllabus calls for only participation (self-test) and DB postings (I think 2). That means the week 5 points are only something like 10% of the final grade. This seems a bit silly and I would have preferred things to be spread out a bit more but it does make for a light conclusion.I also am amused by the instructions for Module 4 for my section that begin:
I haven't actually asked the question but I assume that this isn't meant to apply to the assignments for Mod 4 and that the TA cut & pasted this part along with the rest of the assignment but neglected to edit things.
I'm not sure how things went in the other sections but I have the distinct impression that the TA for mine was not very happy with the assignments that were turned in for Mod 3 (teaching plan and draft handout). Maybe I'm reading too much into the feedback letter that was posted but I got the impression that a lot of folks did poorly on this one.
No matter what, we have only a bit more than a week left - and the end of this class can't come soon enough for me. Then, after the break, it's on to NRSE 335 (Legal/Ethical). For now though, its back to trinucleotide repeat expansion.
Chuckster...I think they are basically telling folks that everything (discussion board postings x3 and replies (6 total)) are due by Sat 8am, so don't wait until the last minute to get stuff done.
I'm still stuck on Sperm Meets Ovum and Extra DNA and how it relates to the pedigree. I hated genetics w/my first degree, and I hate it now. Are we suppose to reference our explanations? I'm sure that's a DUMB question, but hey a girl can hope..LOL
The last assignment was confusing, but this board has helped me not feel alone.
I am PRAYING that people in my section start posting their discussions early so that I can be DONE with this class by Wed.
Chuckster, we'll be together in 335...I hope it's not for commisurating! We're almost done with this one. There are no comments/questions on the question board in my group for Mod 4 surprisingly enough. I don't think Mod 5 will be too bad...just 3 mini essays and 6 responses...cited of course! I've already done the pre and post tests and they were very easy. The end is near!
I just got my grade back for Module 4 in 325. Im surprised I got an A. Thought for sure that it would be much lower. I must say that I cannot see why they expected perfection with the last project seeing that we were loaded down with 2 DB's plus an indepth assignment. Like you guys said....only 1 more week then a very nice break.
I have decided on 410 and 335 for winter. I hope those courses or straight forward and to the point.

Legal is a good class. BUT 30% of your grade is based on"group" discussions. So if your group sucks, that can be a stressor. I had a great group. "MOST" took a part of the assignment, then 1 person put it all together before posting. Of course you will have the slacker, but if you want a good grade, you'll just overlook the slacker and get it done. The slacker will just benefit from not having to do a lot of the work. I know some groups did the discussion assignments other ways, but I liked the way my group did it. I also have to take Gerontology. Should be interesting, since my oldest patient is typically 17.
Scratch that... Fort Hayes is no longer transcribing for Straighterline. So I will be looking into the other schools that offer this.
Thanks for the info i checked the site but i think i will go with the CC.The nutrition class is partially online so i wont have to go into the classroom all the time. Did you apply to OU as yet

I meant to do it today, but didn't get a chance to get it done. Hopefully I can get it taken care of tomorrow.
Thats good if it's a hybrid, probably cheaper for you that way anyways.
Hey..Has anyone taken Nutrition at OU? If so how was it?
Hey Deltaroxxy2, I took Nutrition. It was a pleasant experience. I learned alot of interesting facts. However, they removed my course from blackboard, so I can't remember the details of the structure of the class. All I remember was that I had a life while doing nutrition and business communication together. The teacher spaced out the assignments nicely. Had ample time to complete. Gave us friendly reminders along the way. Had 2 projects that was easily done using the software that comes with the book. (I think it was to record your daily intake over a 3 day period and the calories used and consumed) The computer software calculates everything. We had discussions, but they were fun. You weren't compelled to use 'nursing journal sources'.. Fun class. I think you will enjoy it.
I am having difficulty figuring out Part 2 of Family pedigrees( Mendelian inheritance laws). Could it be that #1 does not fit a pattern inheritance. I have been examining this diagram over and over but I seem to be missing the point. I am a bit confused. Anyone in Health Intervention (nrse325) have any ideas about this one?

Hey thanks for the info. Any test? And I'll be taking the 2nd half of it with gerontology. I am wrapping up business comm now. LOVE that class. I learned so much about myself from the writings.

You're not alone. They both don't fit the Mendelian's Pattern of Inheritance. Which would make them non traditional. My probably is how do I not make both responses for part 2 not sound the same. And part 3 is also confusing b/c what does sperm meeting ovum and extra DNA have to do w/the 2 pedigrees?
I have no clue what sperm meets ovum has to do with the overall picture of non-traditional inheritance. The primary focus of the assignment is in understanding the basic inheritance patterns for part 2, and non-traditional, genetic anticipation for part 3. For the 2 patterns that are non-traditional my answers were a bit redundant.
