Oh Crap I Just Lied On My Application

Published

No I didn't do it on purpose, well...perhaps subconsciously.

I'm applying for a RN-BSN program from a two year community college. When my school tansfer adviser looked over my GPA she told me I should have on trouble being accepted to most places. When I applied to my choice school online just now, I submitted my high school info, my RN program info, and the last page were questions like, have u ever been convicted of a crime, have u ever been suspended or kicked out of school, and things like that. I just clicked no no no, and then submit.

After I hit the submit button it dawned on me that I did get kicked out of a four year year college 12 years ago due to low grades. What should I do now? If I contact the BSN school on Monday, would they still consider me if I disclose that info? The college I went to, I had no plans of transferring any credits over. It was not a nursing major but in something that was way over my head.

Please help!

No one would ever know if you decided to do nothing.

But even if you did contact the BSN school & tell doesn't mean you couldn't be accepted.

Even if you don't intend on transferring credits, you still have to send them those transcripts. Unfortunately, your GPA follows you for the rest of your life. Technically, if you don't tell them and they find out later, even after you graduate, they could kick you out or even revoke your degree. Tell them now and save yourself some pain later. Maybe write a letter explaining it to them and provide evidence of how you have changed since then. Good luck!

I'm just paranoid because although I doubt they actually do go and make an effort to search through all the schools in the country for my name (I didn't take out financial aid and my parents paid for my tuition), I don't know if I can keep having this hovering over my head.

But if I call them on Monday would they disqualify me because they assume I lied on the online application?

Good heavens calm down! You made a mistake, pure and simple! Call on Monday, tell them you forgot to upload some information and ask how you amend your application. I guarantee you aren't the first to make a mistake nor will you be the last.

Call the school, be honest and tell them that you were going through the application quickly and mistakenly checked the "no" button and realized your mistake only after you hit "submit". They will probably ask you to resubmit another app or amend the one that you submitted. I am sure you aren't the first one to do this. Deep breaths now!

I agree the best action is to contact them Monday, explain it was an honest mistake and you want to correct the information. If anything, they will be impressed with your honesty and thoroughness. Best wishes!

IF it was with that group of questions it sounds like they are more concerned that you were asked to leave the school for disciplinary problems rather than asked to drop out because you failed to meet minimum grade requirements.

I think this is a situation that is very interesting. You go to a University and pay the tuition for a service. You did not do well, most likely because the classes you chose either did not interest you or the professors did not inspire you. You were also probably at an age that you did not see the consequences to slacking off.

If you listed the University on your application and then checked NO I HAVE NEVER BEEN EXPELLED then you may have a problem. However, let me point out, that just because the University did not let you register for classes due to a low GPA does not mean you were "kicked out". Did you get a letter from the University stating that you are expelled or you may not register due to a low GPA? I would bet if you went back to the same University today with anything over a 3.0 you would have no problem registering for classes there...lol. It is very rare for students to be dissmissed from Universities. You have to chose at this very point are you going to list that University or not.

My sister was kept from registering at a University after a very sad family crisis and enrolled in community college. Started over and then got into NYU School of Business and remained on Dean's list. In order to not list that University she retook a few classes in community college. She worked really hard and paid both with time and money to wipe that mistake off her record.

I would NOT call them up and tell them you made a mistake. I would also like to add it was not your subconscious, it is called lying...lol. If you decide to list it, just be honest and say "I was immature, and didn't like my major and the institution". The way you gracefully accept your mistakes reflects you character. I would not think twice about hiring a nurse that learned from her mistakes and showed integrity and intelligence.

Tell them you made a mistake. People make mistakes when doing stuff online all the time. I made a mistake when typing in my address when making on online purchase and had to go back and redo it. It involved my credit card, so I was not surprised when the credit card declined anyway. But I corrected my mistake. People at the school should realize that you simply made a mistake.
