Official 2012 Fall RN admission frustration page

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi everyone,

So I figured I should start this page as many of us who are applying to nursing program for Fall 2012 are going to get really anxious soon. I personally am applying to Second entry nursing programs all around GTA and anxiously waiting to hear back from them.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences as you wait for that mighty acceptance letter.

haha sorry didn't mean to, janfrn. :) but i'm really glad to know that it's a good place to live in. most likely i'll be going there.

Specializes in NICU.

Congrats everyone!!

I got my acceptance into the RPN program at Mohawk College 3 days ago!!! I have wanted this for years. I applied the last 4 years to RPN and RN and got rejected because my marks were too low...I guess this was the year! Its my dream come true! I opted for the RPN for now as I'm newly married and don't want to do 4 years right now...its definitely in my future plans though!!

I did Pre-Health at Mohawk 2 years ago and my avg was 79%...2 points under the cut off for BscN that year. I did the HOAE pre-admissions test for RPN and my avg was 79%. Apparently for Mohawk this year 50% of the decision is based on marks and 50% based on the results from the test....and neither were great for me. Maybe its because Im a mature student? The admissions coordinator told me that its extremely competitive...so I'm not sure. But I'm jumping for joy right now!!!

Anyone apply to DAL or UNB nursing? Deadline was March 15th...my application was submitted March 9th....I keep checking the mailbox but I am not really sure when they will be sending out letters....

Jacobyo -- I got in for the St Clair BSN Program too!! We made it :D

Hey guys!

Did anyone get accepted to the Mohawk-McMaster BScN program? On their website, it said that they will be handing out offers by the end of March and it is now already the first day of April! I don't know if there's a problem with admissions or if I just didn't make the cut.. I would also appreciate if some of you can give me an input on Mac's program. I already know about PBL and SDL. I just want to know how you like the overall curriculum (science, nursing courses, labs, tutorials) and clinical placements. Thanks!

Also, is there anyone here who is currently attending Ryerson's nursing program? Many people praise the program and I'm curious to know what is really special about Ryerson's program. I checked their curriculum and I saw that there is not that many health science courses. There's 2 A&P, 3 psychology, and 1 nutrition (if that even counts). Other universities have microbiology, pharmacology, ect. Do you guys feel that you have a strong science foundation to enter the field? Just wondering.. I don't mean to sound offensive or anything. Actually, Ryerson is one of my top choices! :)

Your replies and comments would be greatly appreciated!!!

Heya! I attended Ryerson for a short while earlier in the year, but dropped out for personal reasons, so I have some insight on how I found the curriculum and vibe in general. I found that Ryerson's program has great potential to be a fantastic program, but because it is still relatively new, they have quite a few wrinkles to iron out. There are way too many theory courses integrated into the curriculum, and every year complains about this. The fact that each one is a year long course as well doesn't help the issue either. Another issue I found problematic was that, because they opted to admit more students, this lead to insufficient lab space, and therefore less practice time overall. Course-wise, again, because there are so many students and they try to keep the class sizes small, everyone in the program is segregated and you could have one of 3 possible schedules. What really irked me about this was that there were different profs for different sections, and it seemed though as if there was no sense of communication or an attempt to keep the course uniform in each section. So, for example, you'd have different powerpoints from another class, and theirs may be better than yours. Or, let's say your assessment class is on Tuesday, and another is on Friday. Rather than making an assignment for assessment due at ONE time for everyone, they make it due the day you have class, which puts anyone in the Tuesday class at a disadvantage. It's basically what I said earlier: too disorganized at the time. Feel free to ask more questions, I'd be more than happy to help :)

Thank you so much for your reply! Now that you mentioned this, I'm kinda worried. So, do you think that some of the theory courses are a waste of time and money then? Also, how were the science courses!? I think that is the number one thing that is really holding me back from Ryerson. Overall though, would you highly recommend Ryerson's nursing program? I am so confused, I don't know where I want to go. I've been to a lot of open houses including Ryerson and I still can't decide. There are so many people that like the program, and then there are others who just bash it. In general, most of the negatives people say about is: 3rd year community nursing, disorganized placements (no preferences due to too many students as you said), and like you said, too many theory courses! I know in the end, it doesn't matter what school you go to because you'll still end up with the same degree and all. But as much as possible, I want to be able to enjoy the program and the whole university experience hehe!

Thanks again! :D

Not a problem! Where else are you looking at? Definitely can attest to the above complaints, I've heard and see the same complaints. The sciences courses are well..lacking. I heard patho doesn't prepare at you at all from a pharmacology standpoint, and for me that's alarming. I wasn't impressed with Anatomy/Phys either..no lab component, and the professor isn't the greatest. Nutrition was pretty good, but that was only because the prof was amazing, and I heard she's not teaching it next year. I'd say hold out for Mac; that's where I'm waiting on currently, but for the accelerated program. But yeah let me know where else you're looking at and I'll try to see if I have any insight on the schools (I've been talking to a lot of people / doing a lot of research this past year on nursing schools haha)

I am also looking at York and Western but they are just my back ups. I heard Western is good, but you are kinda limiting yourself to types of placements from what I see in forums. Um, York... Well... They're always on strikes... lol. As for Mac, there are criticisms on PBL. It's either you hate it or you love it. As for their science courses, they are pretty intense. So, science foundation is right on, but clinicals may be lacking (although they do give preferences but placements can be really far). There's not much holding me back from Mac except that I'm going to be taking residence and I don't really like Hamilton. The campus is nice, just not the city ahaha

hey aN85..I live in Hamilton and it is AMAZING! it may not look like it, but you just need to know where to look! i could spend an entire day showing you all the amazing things about Hamilton!

I also have not heard back from mo-mac. I emailed the admission coordinator and also told me the offers would be out by the end of last week...have not heard anything (already accepted the RPN program at Mohawk).
