Off the wall question about NPs

I have a serious question to ask and I hope people will take it the right way. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I AM IN NO WAY KNOCKING OR DENIGRATING THIS SITE NOR THE POSTERS HERE. Hopefully I have prefaced enough.

I have been a member a short time here and what I have noticed is that 98% of the questions asked and the topics being posed have little to nothing to do with me or my interests as a future NP. Questions about whether it's possible to breastfeed a toddler while going part time to a full time program while working as a nurse at a school for mutants does not really interest me (characterization but I hope you get my point). Endless topics/posts of being in class XXX at school X and omg im so happy good luck topics also do not interest me. In short, this forum seems to general and unfocused for me.

I am also a member of physicianassistantforum.com and they are over there talking about the future of the profession, the next PA convention, challenges of the profession, ways to sharpen skills, legislation, advice to up and comers etc.

Where do the professionally minded NPs post? Those that are beyond being a student or a prospective student. Is there a deeper website/forum around? I desire a website where the above topics/interests/etc on the PA forum are spoken about by professionals who realize the challenges of the profession and are interested in pushing themselves and offering helpful advice to new NPs.

I have heard of clinician1 but you need a license to register/read. Googling has yielded little for me.

I appreciate you reading this and offering suggestions. To those who take issue with this question I would ask that you not post. If I have offended you then it is likely you have different interests from me and this question was not meant for you.

try linkedin, they have np groups that may interest...i also visit np blogs as well

will do, thx.

As stated in a previous post by Admin, we strongly suggest others to start topics in the NP forum about practice issues on all levels. The NP forum was created for topics like these. The Pre-NP forum is for those seeking information prior to entering any program. The Student NP forum is for those with questions regarding respective programs and their issues.

So, again, we ask fellow NPs to please start discussions about their practices in the NP forum.

I have enjoyed reading articles from Advance for PAs and NPs site, they have blog sections and post information. They also have a lot of information on practice.

I look over SDN to see what the doctoral level clinicians are up to.

There are a lot of posts on AN about the future of the nursing and APN profession and other professional and legislative issues. I read some of the PA forum after being told about it here.. I like AN better.

I agree. In the "Nurse Practitioners" subsection of the "Advanced Practice Nursing" section, there are usually a good number of threads on professional and legislative issues, which I enjoy reading. PA Forums also has good discussions, though I always get amused when certain posters start putting down nurses and NPs (meanwhile, people at SDN are putting down RNs, NPs, CRNAs, and PAs).

I love AN, but I do wish the issues were a little more clinically-focused. This might not help for NPs, but I'm a member of a FB group called SRNAs and CRNAs and it is really helpful. They only allow verified SRNAs and CRNAs to be members of the group. I have learned so much from my peers just while drinking my morning coffee. Members discuss everything from legitimate political issues effecting practice to case studies. Maybe you could start a similar group for NPs?

Maybe AN could consider an actual ALL NURSES section... where only real nurses/NP/CRNA/CNMs are allowed. I think people would also feel more comfortable discussing practice issues if they knew the forum wasn't open to the public. Just a suggestion!

P.S. Good luck with school, and THANK YOU for your service!!!!!

Excellent question. Allnurses is consistently clogged with "I passed NCLEX, thanks to the lord almighty Jesus Christ our savior! #blessed" posts. I'd love a more professional, thoughtful forum where we could talk about research, news, and current issues in the profession.

Ha, a, that made me laugh out loud it's so spot on,

I do think there's clearly a market here for a professionally focused NP forum for students and practicing NPs. Someone should start it!

Have you looked on the AANP-PAC website and joined there? I understand your post, I have been my district director for the Texas Medical Alliance Association and a member of the American Medical Alliance Association (and have subsequently been banging my head against the wall) and my husband is a member of the American Medical Asooc. and many others. I agree, NP's, MD's, PA's need more political involvement and stronger lobbyists to make change, but, right now are dwarfed by Hospital lobbyists and inundated with governmental changes and implementation of the computerization (if you will) of medicine. That being said, I am currently and foremost concerned as to whether or not I will get accepted into my choice of PMHNP program and after reading through tons of "drivel", I actually have garnered a decent amount of knowledge of acceptance rates, program peculiarities/nuances and things otherwise not found on graduate college websites. I guess you have to take it all and use it to your advantage or what suits your needs at the moment! I also think your state nursing board will offer educational programs/boards to join or websites to further your interests? Good Luck! ;-)
