  1. Ever work in CA as a nurse? The law enforced patient to nurse ratios, now that's one thing the state got right (there aren't many)! Because of the strict laws they maintain a larger float pool and staffing to accomodate for sick calls/no shows/etc. It also forces the hospitals to hire more nurses. Is it perfect? No, but it more safely/fairly addresses staffing issue such as this. One thing I hate about nursing is that the floor/unit can be a real crap show sometimes and you spend all shift killing yourself to straighten it out and you leave and it appears like nothing ever happened. Haha.
  2. No problem, I am glad that I did not offend, it certainly is not my desire to do so. You are right about your online forum observation (not just nursing ones, check out SDN lol). I recently heard it put this way, people in public tend to default to politeness but online or in social media they tend to default to rudeness. I attribute it to the "anonymous" nature of the internet. If only the presence we had on the internet was directly attributed to our actual selves, think how much different the entire internet would be!
  3. Is it wrong? No. Perhaps I should reword it. IF you are person, merely seeking a "stable job" and you think that nursing is the "stable job" for you then you MIGHT be very surprised on that it is a very difficult job that is often very demanding, physically/emotionally, and that it is not merely JUST a stable job. Nursing takes a toll on most people because of these things. These are all facts btw. If you took my post personally, without any mention of you at all, then perhaps you should consider why you did so. I did preface with the words "for all the wrong reasons" did I not? Didn't I start off when the various news sites and their ridiculous lists? Did I not also mention the "legitimate enough" means of getting a nursing degree, an thinly veiled stab at some of the questionable programs out there? Again, you seem extremely sensitive and offended personally by a general post on the state of some people's reasonings on entering nursing, a very challenging and difficult profession.
  4. To those wondering why the revolving door with some nurses - Yahoo, Fox news, CNN, et all constantly have top 273 jobs that are stable and easy to get (or whatever adjective they prefer) and Nursing is ALWAYS in those lists. The truth is, there is always a ton of nursing jobs available (for various reasons). There are entirely too many easy ways to get a "legitimately enough" nursing degree for those who are changing to nursing for all the wrong reasons. If you work as a nurse then you know how hard it can be, those seeking a "stable job" don't. IMO, this is the biggest reason why these "revolving door nurses" exist.
  5. Yes precisely, my "rant" as you call it. I also appreciate the use of the word "rant" to describe my reaction. verb (used without object)1.to speak or declaim extravagantly or violently; talk in a wild orvehement way; rave: The demagogue ranted for hours. verb (used with object)2.to utter or declaim in a ranting manner. noun3.ranting, extravagant, or violent declamation. 4.a ranting utterance. Pardon me for my "violent declamation" or perhaps it was the "speaking extravagantly"? I suppose me being disappointed that someone may have just blown $40,000 thx to what in other avenues of business would be called a con makes me a little unhappy. Perhaps your use of a smiley face is supposed to lessen the fact that you labeled my response as you did? Meh.
  6. Well thanks for finally clearing that up. Had that been said sooner....well whatever.
  7. thanks, i'll check it out.
  8. Thanks, too be fair, I am a prospective NP student, in that I am applying to programs. However, my mind and what interests me is much further down the road, hence my reasons for starting this thread. I think you are right about joining state associations as a starting point.
  9. Yeh I agree with ya for the most part (although I wouldn't use the word drivel, just not interested in it heh). The lack of interest in challenging discussion disappoints me. And SDN? Ugh, no thx. That site is so full of arrogance and a-holes I'd rather not contribute to their site clicks. The sheer stupidity shown there towards nursing, especially by medical students and wanna be med students is unhealthy for my mental health.
  10. I believe that AN does support it. I just think that the large number of new grads and hopefuls are of a different mindset from me, and some others apparently. It is a weird part of nursing that I have noticed. For example, I got a ANA newsletter in the mail today. The headline? "The stem of your flower". Shall I even expand on how, as a 33 year old male, serving 4 combat support tours in the USAF, an avid football lover, on what this makes me feel like? lol. Truly, I desire conversation on practice roles, state defined scopes, legislation, jobs, post school training/OJT stuff, just all the things that profession minded people deal with. The fact that this website has many members as it does and has as few threads on these topics, well, draw from it what you will. I will endeavor to post more I guess, but I'm more of the quiet, only speak when I have something important to say type and would much rather read others thought-inspiring convos than start one (I have 50 facebook friends and they are all real life friends lol).
  11. I have a serious question to ask and I hope people will take it the right way. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I AM IN NO WAY KNOCKING OR DENIGRATING THIS SITE NOR THE POSTERS HERE. Hopefully I have prefaced enough. I have been a member a short time here and what I have noticed is that 98% of the questions asked and the topics being posed have little to nothing to do with me or my interests as a future NP. Questions about whether it's possible to breastfeed a toddler while going part time to a full time program while working as a nurse at a school for mutants does not really interest me (characterization but I hope you get my point). Endless topics/posts of being in class XXX at school X and omg im so happy good luck topics also do not interest me. In short, this forum seems to general and unfocused for me. I am also a member of physicianassistantforum.com and they are over there talking about the future of the profession, the next PA convention, challenges of the profession, ways to sharpen skills, legislation, advice to up and comers etc. Where do the professionally minded NPs post? Those that are beyond being a student or a prospective student. Is there a deeper website/forum around? I desire a website where the above topics/interests/etc on the PA forum are spoken about by professionals who realize the challenges of the profession and are interested in pushing themselves and offering helpful advice to new NPs. I have heard of clinician1 but you need a license to register/read. Googling has yielded little for me. I appreciate you reading this and offering suggestions. To those who take issue with this question I would ask that you not post. If I have offended you then it is likely you have different interests from me and this question was not meant for you.
  12. Since you are not quoting people in your responses I have no idea who you feel is "chastising" you. What I will say is I hope you are able to get your degree conferred and your license granted. I also hope you learn from this experience as it is a very important and expensive lesson to learn. You really should state the name of the school so others can avoid this scam-school btw. I firmly believe in buyer-beware in life. I also firmly believe that any unaccredited program that accepts money, ESPECIALLY federal school loan money should be prosecuted into non-existence. It is fundamentally criminal that these programs are allowed to exist as they are professionally run scams that threaten the very credibility of this profession and are the single biggest argument AGAINST NPs as a legit healthcare provider.
  13. how is this possible? did the school lose accreditation during your attendance or did they not have it before you started? Surely you didnt attend a program that wasn't accredited?
  14. They don't. I am also considering MSN programs now just to open my options. Honesty I just wish I could be in South Bama's Emergency program. The dual FNP/ANP cert is really appealing to me as I am unsure of where I'd like to settle career wise. Nevertheless, I want to get started sooner rather than later so going FNP initially provides a good base knowledge and than I can add the ANP cert later.
