You should question all that you hear. Medicaid does not cover IVF.. never ever in a million years. You're a nurse you should know this. Medicaid will barely cover that which people need!!!

That is why I questioned it. I've only been a nurse for a year and a half and wasn't sure. Sorry for not knowing this.

The news said that each baby now has it's own hospital team with each member wearing ID hats indicating which baby they're in charge of. (total of 46 people). I wouldn't be surprised if Kaiser is eating the cost for all the publicity. Even foreign news crews are stationed outside the hospital. Many of the "beaming" doctors have already been interviewed on local TV shows with movie and book deals being discussed. Only in America.....

Each baby has it's own team? Do you have that many spare staff over there?! They'd be lucky to have 1 between 2 here!

The grandfather is apparently going back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man.

I bet grandpa's going back to Iraq to escape. A war torn country will be more peaceful than his home in a few weeks.

few clarifications are in order:

a. women is 33... no immediate information on whether she is married or who the father of the babies is. her six other children range in age from 2 to 7.

b. it was the grandmother that filed for bankruptcy protection due to having 2 homes and owing creditors -- lots of people having that issue in ca and across us

The Mom (Nadya) has done IVF for all of her children, using the same (unidentified) sperm donor for them all. According to grandma, Nadya "just wanted one more girl"...

You know it really makes me so angry that people are so judgemental about everyone and their and what they are doing. So what this mother had multiple babies. Who cares is if insurance paid for it or not. Its not your business. No one knows what people go through to have children and when they finally are able to be blessed with children its precious to them. Every women in the world can't get pregnant like regular women can. I can almost guarntee that if a women on this board couldn't get pregnant the regular way and she really really wanted a baby, but her only options were IVF or some type of fertility drug that she wouldn't do it. People need to stop being so judgemental and take a moment to think if you didn't have the option to have children with infertility treatments whether insurance paid for it or not. And there are some insurance companies that will pay for it, plus there are other ways to get money besides having insurance. So people need to lay off this woman and all women that have to have infertility treatments whether its an option or not. Be blessed if you have children, because what would you do if a daughter told you, that you could never have children without the help of IVF.

I have a rather unpopular opinion- and that is that all our problems with climate change, food and water shortages, pollution, and many of our economic and social woes around the world are caused, or very much exacerbated by, over-population.

some statistics:

the largest reported number of fetuses in one womb was 15. In 1971, Dr. Gennaro Montanino of Rome claimed to have removed 15 fetuses from the womb of a 35-year-old woman. The largest number of babies ever delivered was in Australia in 1971, when a 29-year-old women gave birth to nonuplets. They all died. (Decaplets were supposedly born in Brazil in 1946, but that report is unconfirmed.) The largest set of children to be born together and survive--not including this week's octuplets, who are all still alive--is seven. A set of septuplets born in Iowa in 1997 became the first to survive infancy. At least two more sets of septuplets have since been born and survived.

Again, I feel that we as a society must engage in discussions of how to ethically utilize (or not utilize) our available technology. Just because we can does not mean we should.

Until all are fed, housed, have access to health care and education...... How many children without a loving home? What a selfish society we are.

I might see your POV if this woman had no other children. But having SIX children already? Single, living with her parents? How does this not scream irresponsible? Beyond all of what you said, having babies this premature run the risk of rampant problems later in life like cerebral palsy, blindness, cardiac defects, brain retardation from bleeds, the list goes on and on. It's irresponsible to risk the quality of life for your future children when you knowingly have that many embryos potentially growing and the risk of prematurity is all but guaranteed.

ITA. We're not "judging" her because we don't think she should have a child. Ok, so she's single, lives at home, with 6 children already ..... no problem there, as long as she loves and provides for each child. But to risk the lives of EIGHT babies, that is what makes me sick. It's nothing about judgement or not wanting her to have a baby. I'm thinking of the babies, they're the innocent ones that will suffer for her stupid choices.

The medical professional who implanted this woman with 8 embryos should share the blame. We have a responsibility to educate our patients not only about what medical science CAN do but about the risks involved in doing so.
