Oakland community college:

I have a couple of questions and if you guys can please answer me I would appreciate it. do you have to apply for the accelerated or are you automatically in it if you have a 4.0?

also, suppose the school does get the grant, how long do they give you to answer yes to the accelerated track?.. and do the acceptance letters for the fast track and the accelerated come seperately?

also, to the ones who are in the program: on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is nursing school at OCC? also, when they assigned the clinical placements in hospital how was your experience there?

if anyone has an answer please let me know... Im going crazy I can no longer wait for that letter...

well thank you so much and i wish all you applicants the best of luck, we totally need itribbon.png

hi sge1985,

congratulations of your acceptance into the program! was the 3.88 cutoff gpa for the students who got into the accelerated part or for the whole program? i was just curious! i am looking into applying for fall of 2012 and the gpa seems to be going up a little bit higher each year. i just have a 3 more classes to complete and i really need some 4.0s! again congratulations!

there is only one formula you need to know and that i can remember. maybe two or three but it cant be more than that. im not telling you by any means to not worry about the math part, but id really concentrate on knowing the drug types and effects. i honestly cant remember doing to many math problems.

pharm is a hard course to really get a head start in cause a lot of things are going to be foreign to you.

i know everyone is very anxious to get rolling on pharm but you can waste a lot of time on things you wont understand until your in the class. i would just get familiar with conversions of tsp and tbsp to metric.

doing some math problems and really and truley getting well versed on medications.

hope this helps

Can these math conversion practice problems be found on OCC's website? Will we be too confused without instruction? thanks!

there are practice problem on the blackboard site, i do believe that there are some on the nursing site of occ also

hi sge1985,

it was for the entire program. there was no accelerated program for the fall of 2011 class. i am also applying for the fall of 2012 class. my advice to you? aim for as close to a 4.0 as you can possibly get in the prerequisite courses. after a 3.88, there's not a lot of numbers left for it to go up!!

Hi WANT2BANURSESOON

Thanks for that information!! Yeah I definately will try to get that 4.0 or at least very close to it! Did you finish your pre-requisites?

I totally agree, the required GPA was higher than even my counselor thought that it would be. I'd definitely be shooting for a 4.0 if I were finishing up my pre-reqs for the next time around. If they re-instate the accelerated program, that would help things a bit. Thank you again for the advice whos...please stick around for us all once we get into the work of the program. :)

i def will stick around and help anyone who wants it.

When OCC does the accelerated portion do they add more students or do they take that group from the 206? I was just curious, I wasn't really sure if it was still about 206 students they take each fall.

If they do the accelerated program, they add those additional spots. The reason they did not offer the accelerated this year was that the DMC is in the process of a merger/buyout with another company. The transition won't happen until June/July which would be too late to start the accelerated program for 2011.

I'm new to allnurses.com/forums and I really don't have a question, more of a comment.

I've been reading through alot of the posts and it is really helpful. (I'm a pre-nursing student, just starting to take my pre-reqs). I went to speak to the counselor at OCC Highland Lakes the other night and I just can't seem to wrap my head around having to get all A's in all the classes. I'm normally an A/B student, but from what it looks like, you really don't have a shot of getting accepted into the nursing program if you dont have a 3.98, which is basically all A's.

I know, to me, it seems impossible right now, but if a zillion others have done it, it MUST be possible. The Chemistry & Bio classes have me a bit worried.

All in All, I plan on giving it my best shot and I wish everyone luck who is still working towards their nursing degree. It has taken me a while to figure out what I want to be when I grow up, :lol2: (I'm 42), but I really think I am on the right track.

Good Luck Everyone!!

I agree it is hard to get all As and I can't believe how much the GPA has gone up each year for OCC's program. I am finishing up my last few pre-requisites and I was hoping to apply to OCC's program for fall of 2012, however, my gpa for the 11 classes is about a 3.84 and this year's cut off was a 3.88, so I am a little short :(. I am going to look into a few other options that I have the pre-reqs for even though all of the other programs are just as competitive. I can only give it my best shop and hope for the best!
