OCC program

Oakland community college:

I have a couple of questions and if you guys can please answer me I would appreciate it. do you have to apply for the accelerated or are you automatically in it if you have a 4.0?

also, suppose the school does get the grant, how long do they give you to answer yes to the accelerated track?.. and do the acceptance letters for the fast track and the accelerated come seperately?

also, to the ones who are in the program: on a scale of 1 to 10 how hard is nursing school at OCC? also, when they assigned the clinical placements in hospital how was your experience there?

if anyone has an answer please let me know... Im going crazy I can no longer wait for that letter...

well thank you so much and i wish all you applicants the best of luck, we totally need itribbon.png

I was looking at other accredited colleges and noticed that Madonna University has a low GPA acceptance for the nursing program. Not that I am saying that I would go this route, but if I give my all at OCC, I would CONSIDER it. Although, OCC's nursing program is suppose to be one of the best.

Does anyone know how reputable Madonna Univerisity is? Do the graduates get hired without probs? For some reason, I see Madonna University kind of like a University of Phoenix. I'm not saying those are bad colleges AT ALL, but I'm not sure if they would be as reputable as OCC.

If anyone has info on Madonna and their stats, please post.

I don't really know about the various 'reputations' of the nursing programs in Michigan. I will tell you that I think OCC's reputation just has to do with the fact that it's so darn hard to get in!

I don't know a lot about madonna university. I will tell you though that don't be fooled by a low gpa posting on a website. By that standard, OCC's nursing brochure states that 'anything less than a 2.0 in a prereq won't be accepted' or something to that effect...but we all know that in reality the numbers are far different. So make sure with madonna before you get excited :p

I know two nurses who went to Madonna and I believe they are excellent nurses. My biggest issue with Madonna is cost. It's expensive. That's why i'm trying for OCC....along with everyone else!

occ is suppose to be rated #2 in the metro area second only to detroit mercy BSN program, when it comes to being desired by potential employers. the reason i was told is that its because we have the most clinical hours of any program, 16hrs a week and we actually do things when we are in clinical.

the best advice an can give on a program is NOT to give into the temptation of ITT. that school cost $55,000 for an ADN that is not accreditted.

ACK 55,000 for an associates?!

Is there a list of rankings for programs? I'd be interested in seeing that........

thanks!

the list i saw was from an administrator at the DMC, she was telling my clinical group that when they look at hiring they look at Detroit Mercy grads first and then look at OCC grads second. St Joes also said that they love having us because we are ready to work and know what we are doing.

no list putting all the schools in order or anything.

I also know someone who graduated from Madonna University with a BSN and she is a great nurse too. I looked into applying to their program, but it is too expensive.

Im glad to hear OCC students are near the top of the list in terms of being desirable to employers.

I keep seeing in other threads that nurses are a dime a dozen now and that its tough to get hired right now in most states....kinda worries me...

I am currently a Madonna University student and seriously are you kidding me? Madonna has been around since 1937 and has a wonderful reputation. Everywhere I go as a student nurses and doctors tell me what a great education I'm getting by going there and they have several grad's working for them. It's also a sister school to U of D Mercy and maybe you are unaware because it is a small school and a Catholic University. It is also accreditted by CCNE and has a chapter in Sigma Theta Tau. Class sizes are 30 or less to 1 and well it's a great university. It is not an easy school by any means and has a harder gradig scale then OCC and many other schools but having professor's that actually want you to succeed and learn and treat you with respect makes working harder worth it.

One otehr thing someone wrote about cost and although Madonna is a private school it less expensive then U of D and Wayne state and with f/a I am going to end up paying less then 15,000. for my BSN. What is stated on the web-site is the bare minimum, it is also competitive to get in as all nursing schools are. Meeting with a nursing advisor would give you realistic expectations.

I realized Madonna was a private university and when I looked online it said $510 per nursing semester hour which on the web page it did say they were below the national average as far as cost for a private school. Maybe it isn't that expensive. I have friends who got their BSNs from Madonna University and really liked their nursing program. They thought it was worth the cost of tuition to attend Madonna University! Iluvpatho, you are right all nursing schools are competitive. Also, the recommendation to meet with a nursing advisor is helpful advise. I did that at Madonna and it helped me a lot!

Can anyone currently in the ADN program at OCC tell me if you get the same, thanksgiving, christmas/new years, and spring break as other occ students? I know some units are 7 1/2 weeks long instead of 15..is there any break inbetween these 1/2 semesters before going on to the next?

Thanks!

the breaks are pretty much the same

if you have clinical on the week of thanksgiving and you have the tues/wed rotation you get to go to clinical while the thur/fri people have it off. dont have school on christmas or new years

you get 1 week off after every 7 week semester and july and August off between first and second year
