OB Rotations

Published

I've got OB/Peds this fall, and I'd like to know what some of you had to during your OB rotations. What else is typically required during OB? For example, are you forced to rotate through the nursery, etc?

I'll have that along with community and public health as well as issues and trends in healthcare and nursing.

Exciting semester. :uhoh3:

I haven't done my OB rotation yet, but my plan is basically to show up and do the bare minimum to keep from failing.

At my school, during the OB rotation, we each took a turn (1 shift) rotating through surgery. That was probably my favorite part of OB. If the census was low we would have a mom or baby. Otherwise we would have a mom/baby pair. Another project we had to do was a teaching plan & presentation. Very easy rotation overall.

Ditto. I'm pretty good at looking like I'm doing something but letting another student enjoy the experience of doing the ugly stuff.

Specializes in Infusion.

What would be the "ugly stuff"?

What would be the "ugly stuff"?

As an example, although not OB-specific, cleaning under the crusted foreskin of a diseased member.

Yes, I can see that. Good point, I just needed to think outside the box a little.

You must be popular with your classmates ...

Surprisingly, yes, even considering the age gap. Your attempt at sarcasm is appreciated though.

Now, back to OB. What do we do there?

Yeah I can relate, I've cleaned up a lot (as one instructor called it) member cheese. :barf02:

We rotated between postpartum (mostly mom, not baby), newborn nursery and gyn patients. The guys in my class hated it, lol. and lots of the new moms said NO WAY to a male nursing student. We had 12 hours in each area. Be prepared for lots of teaching--breastfeeding, bottlefeeding etc.

Assessment on mom and baby. LOTS of teaching (bathing baby, expected output, breastfeeding, recognizing infant cues, baby blues and postpartum depression, healing expectations of mom, etc). Baby baths. Some people got to watch c-sections and natural births (for us, it was based on whether you wanted to). We could also spend the day in NICU if we chose to. Moms and babies room together at my hospital, so no separate nursery.

I enjoyed OB but I found there was a lot of downtime for us students; we had one only mom/baby pair.
