OB and Ped's clinicals in Jan - any prep advice?

I will be starting clinicals for OB and Ped's in Jan. Any advice on stuff to look at before? Things to make life a bit saner during?

No suggestions from me, I just wanted to hide during OB and peds clinicals. LOL

I watched one vag birth, couldn't wait to get out of the room. You couldn't pay me to watch a c-section.

I liked the babies, they were cute, cudly and behaved themselves, perfect little patients.

Our group was fortunate to go to OB clinicals after we'd completed lectures on newborn and gestational age assessments. So looking at newborns was interesting from that standpoint.

Yeah, I don't like OB, I really don't want to watch another vag delivery nor feel another fundus when I'm in the RN program LOL

I really liked OB and love pediatrics. C-sections rock....

My OB advice is do not forget Risk for Maternal Injury; Hemorrhage and Risk for Neonatal Injury; thermoregulation on your care plans.

For Peds keep in mind that children compensate for hemorrhage... You will not see reduced BP until they are on the verge of shock. First vital sign indication of hemorrhage in children under age 8 will be Tachycardia.

I'm actually looking forward to starting Peds and OB. I would really love to work in either area after I complete school.

I start Peds and OB next month and I'm not particularly looking forward to it either. Glad I'm not the only one!

I start OB/Peds next month, too. I seriously can not wait. It's going to make me have the worst baby fever!

Chocobean you sound like someone new to nursing. I've been a paramedic forever and I'm dreading OB Peds rotation. Though I worked gyn and peds (outpatient) in my army days. Be careful what you wish for... I find the birthing process to be nasty with all the fluids. And parents seem to be the main problem in peds. I wish all of us good luck this spring.

haha, yeah, it didnt help my baby rabies, thats for sure!:loveya: But no babies for me until I pass NCLEX.

I loved OB. In fact, I am on a maternity unit for my immersion/preceptorship starting next month. 400hours next semester!

I always say Saunders NCLEX review. Its comprehensive and their OB/Maternity and Pedi sections are excellent. Plus, you get review questions at the end of each chapter, with the detailed rationales.

Our program also uses ATI so we had those review books as well.

In general, I'd refresh on med/surg, especially for pedi.

The parents in peds is what to watch out for. Being able to "small talk" with children is a >>> HUGE

OB ... babies are fun ... C/S is fun for the first time ..... never saw vag. The baby mammas? I dunno, they "let the girls" do all that stuff. I put that as nicely as possible ... the dudes stuck to the babies as most of the time the women weren't "comfortable" with male student nurses ... most guys just "get through OB"

I am hoping to be a bit more prepared for this rotation simply because I've had three kids! But seeing it from the other side will be different I'm thinking.....
