Hello All,

I recently passed my NCLEX and went on a search for my first job as a nurse,on a L&D Unit. Well, yesterday I met with the ADN of a NYC hospital and she offered me the job on the spot. I was floored. The place was absolutely gorgeous and the staff was very nice. I felt embraced by the environment and knew that these were people I really wanted to work with. I had interviewed in a few other places and did not feel this way at all places. The ADN takes pride in her unit and wants to make sure her new nurses are practicing safely and confidently.

The orientation to the unit takes a minimum of 4-6 months. I think this is pretty good considering that they are training me in L&D triage, L&D, Recovery, OR Scrub, and Peds. She offerede to extend my orientation if I felt that the 4-6 months was not enough; how great is that?!

I will start my training on days, with a few weeks of classroom training, and then switch over to nights which is my permanant shift.

This is my dream job out of school, especially since not all hospitals in the city hire new grads into L&D. Most will require that you have previous experience before they will consider you.

I just wanted to share my exciting news with all you OB nurses and hopefuls. You just have to do your research and keep looking to see which hospitals will offer a new grad this opportunity with the right training.

Thank you all for your well wishes and congratulations.

I will definitely milk that orientation until it is bone dry. I know that the longer and more comprehensive the orientation is for me, the better.

Specializes in Junior Year of BSN.

Congratulations on your new job!:smiley_aa

Specializes in Surgical Services.

Also being a new nurse, what they taught in school about the reality shock is true. I love this more than I could tell you but it is a learning curve. I am a new OR nurse and that is unheard of where I am from. None of the hospitals around hire straight from school to the OR without going through a specialized interop program, I am learning on the job. Everyday for weeks I would take a few moments everyday to be thankful of where I was and what opportunity I had been given. If you ever want to chat, PM me. Have fun!!

Specializes in Medical/Surgical, L&D, Postpartum.

Congratulations!!! That is awesome news!!! I am currently in my OB rotation right now and am enjoying it very much. How did you know that L&D is where you truly want to be?? I am in school right now and don't really know where I want to work after I am done with school. I would love to work in L&D but I might do the year of med/surg first. We'll see, I might change my mind!!! Keep us posted!!!

Specializes in L&D/Mother-Baby.

Hello Erika Ann,

I have always known that I loved Obstetrics, even before starting nursing school. I guess watching all those shows on TV and just talking with my mom, grandmother, and aunts about their deliveries really peaked my interest in the subject. Mind you, these are women who've had at least 3 kids each. heheheh! I've read a lot about obstetrics and midwifery and when I did my rotation in nursing school, that definitely sealed it for me.

Although we were not very hands on during our OB rotation, just being able to provide teaching and emotional support to my very young new moms (i.e., 16 y/o) and their families was very fulfilling to me. I knew that in addition to the support and teaching that goes into Anterpartum/L&D/PP, I wanted to get more intimate with the whole process from start to finish. In addition, I wanted to get more involved in the technical aspect of nursing care for pregnant, laboring, and PP moms.

Luckily, our orientation is comprehensive and ranges from the antepartum to the postpartum period. I will primarily be a L&D nurse, however, will be expected to work with moms in any of the stages I've described above.

I feel so elated and so excited about this amazing opportunity. The Lord has truly blessed me and will help me get through any rough patches I encounter as a new nurse.

Take care.

Melody
