Hello All,
I recently passed my NCLEX and went on a search for my first job as a nurse,on a L&D Unit. Well, yesterday I met with the ADN of a NYC hospital and she offered me the job on the spot. I was floored. The place was absolutely gorgeous and the staff was very nice. I felt embraced by the environment and knew that these were people I really wanted to work with. I had interviewed in a few other places and did not feel this way at all places. The ADN takes pride in her unit and wants to make sure her new nurses are practicing safely and confidently.
The orientation to the unit takes a minimum of 4-6 months. I think this is pretty good considering that they are training me in L&D triage, L&D, Recovery, OR Scrub, and Peds. She offerede to extend my orientation if I felt that the 4-6 months was not enough; how great is that?!
I will start my training on days, with a few weeks of classroom training, and then switch over to nights which is my permanant shift.
This is my dream job out of school, especially since not all hospitals in the city hire new grads into L&D. Most will require that you have previous experience before they will consider you.
I just wanted to share my exciting news with all you OB nurses and hopefuls. You just have to do your research and keep looking to see which hospitals will offer a new grad this opportunity with the right training.
That's great! It really helps to know what you want so you can get right to it! I have the feeling that I'll be a "wanderer" once I graduate. I always see to be interested in my current clinical... until the new clinical. I'll probably do the standard med/surg and see where that gets me. Again, congrats! Very exciting.
