Hey!
I thought I should start a thread for people who applied to the NYU 15 Month Accelerated Nursing Program for Fall 2008.
Lets all be friends while we wait for April 1st to come around!
Does anybody have any info the selection process? Obviously it's competitive, but are they looking at anything in particular? (GPA, Pre-reqs, Extra-curriculars, etc.)
Share your stories and input.
NO, and I'm dying to hear!!! haha. It is frustrating. But I did just get into Pace University's BSN/MSN program in NYC today actually, so that was exciting. I have to confirm or defer acceptance by May 6th, and I dont know if I'm going to hear from NYU by then! Aah!
Are you supposed to be hearing from anywhere else Duke? Did you apply anywhere in California?
Im sure you should hear very soon! did you call and check your status? The only other place I am waiting to hear from is the ABSN at Samuel Merritt in SF CA but I won't hear from them till the end of june and don't really want to go there. So NYU is def my first pick, Thats great that you have a place somewhere though! I think it's weird how they are doing their acceptances for nyu one at a time...
Well the same thing happened to me as you, Duke. I called to check my app status and she said that one of my transcripts was missing.....then she found it. So my app is (hopefully) goign to be reviewed in the next decade. haha. Oh well, what can you do.
As for the rolling admissions, I'm not too fond of it either. But I did look at last years posts and they let some of their applicants know REALLY late. Like REALLY late. They told one girl 5 DAYS before orientation. How insane is that? Maybe that was an exception, but a lot of people find out staggered.
Samuel Merritt is a great school....hope you get in. I really want to live in San Francisco eventually. Looked into SM, but did not have all the prereqs they wanted at the time (Pharm, etc). Have you finished all of NYUs and SM's prereqs already?
Good luck!
addie
Thats weird how that happened to both of us, where in CA are you? Yes I too saw that last year people heard in the first week in may, so hopefully next week. I am still going to check my status at the end of this week to make sure that my app doesn't have "missing transcript" next to it. I had called twice and they said the same things both times, but the second time I made sure that it was ok. I don't have all my prereqs done but will at the end of may. If I went to Sam Merritt I was going to do patho/pharm after I got in (over the summer before it started) because I didn't want to go to the trouble of taking it unless I absolutely needed to. Im not planning on going there though , i might reapply some other places if I don't get nyu. Do you have all the nyu prereqs done?
I'm in LA. And I'm in the exact same predicament. I dont really want to go to Pace...it was kindof a backup....and now, it seems like that is the only option unless I defer, take a year off, and see if I can get in anywhere else in the meantime (may move up to San Fran actually...kinda tired of LA). Yeah I will have finished up all the prereqs by May too. When I submitted my app, I had all the prereqs finished except chem and micro (which I'm taking now).
I really dont know what to do though. I have to say something to Pace by the 6th and Im guessing i wont hear from NYU by then. Do I go ahead and go to Pace? Have you heard anything about that school? I tried posting on the page but nobody has responded. Do any NYers know anything about that nursing school? Anyone? If so, please let me know!!!! I kinda just applied on a whim. But now, it may be where I end up. Crossing my fingers for NYU.

In my opinion , I would accept the offer from pace and go forth with the process as if you were going to attend in the fall. However, if and when you recieve acceptance from nyu and thats where you want to go; couldnt you then let pace know that there is a change in your situation and you decided not to attend. The only questionable thing would be the deposit you have to pay to pace, would you loose it if you decide not to attend?
Good luck and congratulation on your acceptance
I think it is a good idea if you send in your deposit as close to the deadline they give you as possible, in case you hear from nyu soon. Then tell them you decline if you get into nyu. You most likely will lose your deposit unless you hear from nyu soon after you send in the deposit. I think it is worth losing $300 or so to ensure your place in nursing school if you def want to go there if you don't get into nyu. I have a friend who actually was accepted into 3 schools and sent in her deposits for the first 2 and then cancelled them when she heard from her top choice.
hey addie,
Everyone is saying that you should make the deposit and cancel in case you get into NYU. Even though that does seem like a good plan, I think you should really think about what you want. Im in a similar situation, where i got into a backup school, but waiting on NYU.
I spoke with my undergrad advisor and this is the advice she gave me:
Do you care where you get your education (quality) or do you just want the nursing degree? By accepting your backup school offer, you are pretty much accepting the fact that you are going there. Say you dont get into your preferred schools, will you be happy going to Pace? Cuz taking a year off to go to a school/program that you really want may be the better choice. Your nursing education plays a big role in taking the NYCLEX exam. In addition, your education is all you have to rely on for the first couple of years in your nursing career (since experience is limited to clinicals). Though disputable, some people believe that a top name like NYU goes a long way in getting better jobs.
But if you like Pace, then make that deposit. I have a few friends at Pace, but not in the nursing program. Mixed reviews, but then again, i find that people rarely have perfect views of their college.

Hi All!
For those in Cali and elsewhere,
If you do decide to attend NYU and cannot afford the campus based housing, anything within that section of NYC will be rather astronomical...and that holds true for the rest of the city, believe my I've tried to find housing for summer employment I had there...but ended up commuting from NJ.
If you decide to live within a vicinity that allows you to commute, consider checking out craiglist for roomies, or potential 15monthers as well....hopefully they will be many.
-certain sections of Brooklyn and Queens (Sunnyside) are slightly more affordable (my friends pay $550.00 per month, including utilities)
-even some areas in the Bronx are nice as well
-a commute from Jersey City in NJ is not bad (it's a matter of perhaps a bus ride, ferry, or path over into the city..depending upon your location)
-even Guttenberg, Fairfield, Hackensack, and Fort Lee, NJ are very doable commutes if you plan it out accordingly with mass transit
Although, coming from out of state, there is nothing I imagine like living in NYC!
Good luck to us all! :)
